What it actually is

An eclipse is a New or Full Moon that happens near a lunar node — the points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's. Away from a node the shadow simply misses.

⚠️ Both conditions are required, and checking only the first is the classic error. Every New Moon is a syzygy; only the ones near a node are eclipses. Test the syzygy alone and you return thirteen times too many results. Umbriel solves for both, which is why what comes back is four to seven a year — the true rate.

Each is dated to the minute and placed by sign and degree, so you can see which part of your own chart it lands on. The nodes are computed for the moment rather than taken from a mean value for the year.

The traditional reading is acceleration — things that were already moving tend to move faster — rather than doom. Eclipses come in pairs and seasons, roughly every six months.

They also repeat in families. The same geometry recurs about every eighteen years and eleven days, so an eclipse close to a degree in your chart has relatives roughly that far before and after it — which is what makes an eclipse worth looking back from as well as forward to.

How Umbriel computes it

An eclipse needs two conditions at once, and checking only the first is the commonest error — it would return thirteen times too many results. It must be a syzygy, Sun and Moon conjunct or opposed; AND it must happen near a lunar node, where the Moon's latitude is small enough for the shadow to reach. Umbriel solves for both, so what comes back is four to seven a year, which is the true rate. Each is dated to the minute and placed by sign and degree, and the nodes are computed for the moment rather than taken from a mean value for the year. That detail decides borderline cases: the true node oscillates around the mean by up to about a degree and three quarters, which is easily enough to move a marginal syzygy in or out of eclipse range. Umbriel's node was checked against JPL and corrected — it had been out by as much as 38 arcminutes and now sits within a fraction of one — and this page is one of the places that error would have shown up as a wrong answer rather than a slightly wrong number.
