What it actually is
Two people's bodygraphs are not simply compared — they are combined. A channel needs two gates, and the interesting ones are the channels where you each hold one end, so the circuit only closes when you are together.
The system names four ways that can happen, and they feel completely different. Electromagnetic — you each hold one end, which is the magnetic one: attraction and friction running down the same wire. Companionship — you both hold the whole channel, which is easy and can become an echo chamber. Dominance — one of you holds the whole channel and the other only a gate of it, so one tends to shape the other there. And compromise, where the halves meet unevenly.
⚠️ Both exact birth times are needed, and that is not a formality. The design half of a bodygraph is computed 88 degrees of solar arc before birth, so an hour of error moves gates on both charts and changes which channels complete. Umbriel says so rather than drawing a connection chart it cannot stand behind.

How Umbriel computes it
Both bodygraphs are computed in full — each person's two charts, personality and design, 88 degrees of solar arc apart — and then the pair's gates are laid over one another to see which of the thirty-six channels complete BETWEEN them rather than within either. A channel one person half-holds and the other completes is the connection the system actually cares about, and the four ways it can happen are counted separately: electromagnetic (each holds one end), companionship (both hold the same whole channel), dominance (one holds the whole channel and the other only a gate of it), and compromise. Because the design side is 88 degrees of solar arc before birth, both exact birth times are needed; without them the gates move and the channel list changes.
