What it actually is

A relocation chart keeps your birth moment exactly as it was and asks what the sky looked like from a different point on Earth. The planets do not move — they were where they were — but the horizon does, so the Ascendant, the Midheaven and every house cusp change.

That is the whole technique, and it is why relocation is read for questions about place: moving does not change your chart's planets, but it changes which part of your chart is on the horizon and which is overhead.

⚠️ It requires an exact birth time, without exception. Relocation is entirely a statement about the angles, and the angles are what a birth time gives you. With no time there is nothing to relocate — the planets are identical everywhere, so a relocation chart without a birth time is just your chart again.

Umbriel computes the relocated angles and houses and names which placements changed house, rather than leaving you to compare two wheels by eye.

How Umbriel computes it

The birth moment is held exactly as recorded, in universal time, and only the observer's latitude and longitude change. The angles are recomputed from local sidereal time at the new place and the houses rebuilt from those angles under whichever house system you have set — so a relocation in a quadrant system moves the intermediate cusps unevenly, as it should, rather than rotating the whole wheel rigidly. The planets are untouched, because nothing about them depends on where you stand.

Common questions

What is a relocation chart?

Your birth chart re-cast for a different place on Earth. The moment stays the same, so the planets stay put; the horizon changes, so the angles and houses move.

Does moving change my birth chart?

It does not change your planets, which is the part most people mean. It changes which house each one falls in and what sits on your angles, which is what relocation astrology is about.

Do I need my birth time for a relocation chart?

Yes, absolutely — more than for any other technique. Relocation is entirely about the angles, and without a birth time there are no angles to move.

What is the difference between relocation and astrocartography?

They answer the same question in different formats. A relocation chart is one place in detail; astrocartography is a world map of the lines where each planet sits on an angle. Umbriel has both.

Can a relocation chart tell me where to live?

It can tell you what changes, which is not the same thing. A relocated chart shows which of your placements move onto the angles and into different houses somewhere else; whether that is desirable is a judgement, and one no calculation makes for you. Umbriel offers it as something to think with rather than as advice about your life.

Does my relocated chart replace my birth chart?

No. The birth chart remains what it is — relocation is an additional view, read alongside it, not a replacement. Your planets and their aspects are identical in both.

Is the relocation calculator free?

Yes — any location, the relocated angles and houses, and the astrocartography map, with no account.
