What a Venus sign actually is
Your Venus sign is where Venus stood at your birth. It is traditionally associated with attraction, taste, affection and value — what appeals to you, how you show warmth, what you consider worth having. Older astrology also gives Venus money and ornament, which is less romantic and often more recognisable.
Venus never strays far from the Sun. Because its orbit sits inside Earth's, it can only appear about 48° away at most — which means your Venus is in your Sun sign or one of the two adjacent signs, always. That is a genuinely useful sanity check: if a site gives you a Venus five signs from your Sun, something has gone wrong. It also explains why Venus arrives as either the morning star or the evening star and never at midnight.
Its pace varies more than most planets. Venus crosses a sign in about four weeks when it is moving briskly — but it turns retrograde roughly every nineteen months for about forty days, and a sign it is retrograding through can hold it for four months. That retrograde is worth knowing about in a natal chart: it is traditionally read as a more inward, reconsidering relationship to what Venus governs, not as a fault.
What's in your result
- Sign and exact degreeTo the degree and minute — which matters when Venus sits near a sign boundary, as it often does given how tightly it hugs the Sun.
- The house it falls inWhere the Venus business tends to show up. This is the part that needs your birth time.
- Retrograde or directWhether Venus was moving forward at your birth, and how fast — including the near-station slowness either side of a turn.
- Every aspect it makesEach contact with its exact orb, and whether it was applying or separating.
- Its distance from the SunHow far Venus sat from the Sun — morning star or evening star, a distinction traditional astrology reads as two different characters.
- The sign's rulerWhere Venus's dispositor sits: the placement the whole Venus story answers to.
Don’t know your birth time?
Umbriel does not fill the gap with a guess. Tick “I don’t know the exact time” and it checks your whole birthday, hour by hour, then tells you two things: which placements are the same whatever time you were born — as exact as they would be if you knew the minute — and which are down to two signs, both named, so you know what a parent’s memory would settle.
The Ascendant, the Midheaven and the houses are left out rather than approximated. A birth time is the one thing they cannot be computed without, and an approximate Rising sign that looks exact is worse than no Rising sign at all.
Common questions
Can I find my Venus sign without a birth time?
Almost always, yes. Venus spends around four weeks in a sign, so the date is usually enough — the only exception is a birth within a day or so of Venus changing sign, where the hour decides it. What you cannot get without a time is the house Venus falls in, and Umbriel leaves that blank rather than guessing.
What does the Venus sign actually mean?
It is traditionally read for attraction and taste: what draws you, how you express affection, what you find beautiful or valuable. Many people find Venus describes what they are drawn to better than what they are like — best held as a prompt rather than a rule.
What does it mean if my Venus is retrograde?
It means Venus appeared to move backwards at your birth, which happens for about forty days every nineteen months — so roughly seven percent of people have it. It is traditionally read as a more private or reconsidering relationship to affection and value. It is not a flaw, and any reading that treats it as one is overselling a fairly common configuration.
Why is my Venus sign different from my Sun sign?
Because they are different bodies. Venus can be up to two signs from the Sun in either direction — it simply cannot be further, which is a property of its orbit rather than a rule of astrology.
Is this Venus sign calculator free?
Yes — sign, degree, house, retrograde status and aspects, with no account and no email.
