Vimshottari means one hundred and twenty — the length in years of the full cycle. It divides a life into nine mahadashas, each ruled by one graha, running in a fixed order: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17. The nine add up to 120, and the sequence never varies.

What varies is where you enter it. The dasha you are born into is decided by your Moon's nakshatra lord, and how much of it remains is decided by how far through that nakshatra the Moon had travelled — a Moon nine tenths of the way through Ashwini is born with a tenth of a Ketu dasha left. That single measurement sets every date that follows, which is why this technique is unusually sensitive to the Moon's exact position.

Each mahadasha subdivides into nine antardashas in the same order, proportioned by the same year-lengths. Umbriel prints the sub-periods of the chapter you are actually in, and marks the one running today, so the answer to "what is happening now" is two lines rather than a chart to interpret.

⚠️ Umbriel uses the mean lunar node for this, as classical Jyotish does, and switches the whole computation to it rather than inheriting whatever the app is set to. The mean and true nodes differ by up to about a degree and three quarters, which is enough to move Rahu and Ketu across a divisional boundary — so a Vedic page that quietly used the app-wide setting could hand two readers different dashas from the same birth.

The dasha sits alongside the rest of the Vedic section: your nakshatra table, the Navamsa and all sixteen divisional charts, Sade Sati, the Kundli in North or South Indian form, the classical yogas, drishti, the Panchanga of your birth day, the Char Karakas, the Arudha Lagna and the Yogi point — all cast from the same sidereal chart.

The Moon's sidereal longitude gives its nakshatra and, from the nine-lord cycle, that nakshatra's ruler. The fraction of the mansion the Moon has NOT yet crossed, multiplied by that lord's full period, gives the balance of the dasha you were born into — so the whole timeline hangs on one measurement and inherits the Moon's precision. Successive periods follow the fixed order at their fixed lengths, which sum to 120 years, and a year is taken as 365.25 days. Antardashas divide the current mahadasha into nine in the same order, each proportioned as that lord's years divided by 120, and the segment containing the present moment is marked. ⚠️ The mean node is forced for the whole Vedic computation and the previous setting restored afterwards, because Umbriel lets a reader switch the app between the true and mean node for the Western chart, and inheriting that here would give two readers different dasha dates from identical birth data. The dates are computed rather than looked up, so the timeline extends past the century in either direction without a table to maintain.
