What the houses actually are
The houses divide the chart into twelve areas of life — self, money, communication, home, and so on round to the twelfth. Where the signs describe a style, the houses describe a place: the part of a life a planet's business shows up in. It is usually the layer that makes a chart feel specific rather than generic.
⚠️ And it is the layer with the least agreement. The signs are fixed thirty-degree divisions; the houses are not. A dozen systems are in serious use and they cut the sky up differently — Placidus by time, Whole Sign by whole signs, Regiomontanus and Koch by different great circles. The same chart can put Venus in the 9th under one and the 10th under another. Neither is a bug. There is no experiment that settles it.
Two practical notes. Every system puts the Ascendant on the 1st cusp, so your rising sign never changes between them — but in Whole Sign the Midheaven is not the 10th cusp and can land in the 9th or 11th, which surprises people moving over from Placidus. And Placidus, which is the most widely used, breaks down near the poles: above roughly 66° latitude it cannot produce houses at all, so a birth in far northern Scandinavia or Alaska needs a different system entirely.

Common questions
What is the difference between Placidus and Whole Sign houses?
Placidus divides the sky by time, so houses vary in size and can be very lopsided at high latitudes. Whole Sign makes each house exactly one sign, starting from the rising sign. Whole Sign is the older method and has returned to wide use; Placidus is the modern default. They frequently place the same planet in different houses.
Which house system is correct?
There is no answer that settles it, and anyone certain is expressing a preference. What can be said plainly: the Ascendant is on the 1st cusp in all of them, Placidus fails above about 66° latitude, and Whole Sign is the only common system where the Midheaven is not automatically the 10th cusp. Try your chart in two and see which describes your life better — that is what most astrologers actually do.
Do I need a birth time for houses?
Yes, and there is no way around it. The houses are built from the Ascendant, which moves a degree every four minutes. Without a time Umbriel shows planets and signs and leaves the houses out rather than casting noon.
Why is my planet in a different house on another site?
Almost always a different house system, or a birth-time zone difference of an hour. A planet close to a cusp can move house on a few minutes of birth time, which is worth knowing before reading much into a borderline placement.
