How the Chinese zodiac actually works
The Chinese zodiac runs on a twelve-year cycle of animals — Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig — crossed with five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water), which produces a full sixty-year cycle before any combination repeats.
The common mistake is assuming the animal changes on 1 January. It doesn't: the year turns at the lunar new year, which falls anywhere from late January to late February. Anyone born in that window is regularly assigned the wrong animal by simple year-based lookups. Umbriel uses the actual date of the new year.
Beyond the year animal, the tradition assigns animals to the month, day and hour of birth too — sometimes called the inner and secret animals. The year animal is the one everybody knows; the others are where the detail lives.

What is my Chinese zodiac sign if I was born in January?
Most likely the previous year's animal. The Chinese year begins at the lunar new year — late January to late February depending on the year — so a January birthday usually falls in the year before the one on your birth certificate.
What does the element add?
The five elements cycle every two years, so each animal appears in five flavours across the sixty-year cycle — a Wood Dragon is read differently from a Metal Dragon. The element is traditionally said to describe the manner, the animal the nature.
Is the Chinese zodiac related to Western astrology?
Not directly. Western astrology tracks the Sun through twelve signs within a single year; the Chinese zodiac assigns an animal to each whole year on a twelve-year cycle. Different systems, different mechanics — Umbriel calculates both.
