What a transit actually is
A transit is simply a planet where it is now making an angle to a planet or point in your birth chart. The natal chart never changes; the sky keeps moving; a transit is the meeting of the two. That is the whole mechanism, and it is why transits are the part of astrology most often used for timing.
Speed is what sorts them. The Moon transits everything in a month and is gone in hours. Mercury, Venus and Mars pass through in days. Jupiter and Saturn take weeks and often come back two or three times because of retrogrades, so a single contact can be a season rather than a day. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto can sit within orb for a year or more, which is why they tend to be read as chapters rather than events.
Two things make a transit list worth reading rather than alarming. First, applying versus separating: a transit still tightening tends to be the live one, while a separating contact has largely spent itself. Second, orb — a contact half a degree away and one seven degrees away are not the same thing, and a list that prints them identically is not telling you much. Umbriel gives both. And a transit is a description of a period, not a prediction of an event.

Common questions
What are transits in astrology?
Where the planets are right now, measured against where they were when you were born. When a moving planet makes an aspect to something in your birth chart, that is a transit — the main way astrology talks about timing.
Which transits actually matter?
Generally the slow ones. Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto contacts to your Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Midheaven are the ones traditionally read as significant, because they last long enough to describe a period. Moon transits change several times a day and are mostly noise unless you are watching for something specific.
Do I need my birth time for transits?
For transits to your planets, no — those are calculated from the date. For transits to your Ascendant, Midheaven and houses, yes, and those are often the most concrete ones. Umbriel shows what it can stand behind and leaves the rest out.
Can I look at transits for a future date?
Yes. The calculator is not locked to today — set any date and it recalculates the whole picture for that moment, which is the usual way to look ahead at a Saturn or Jupiter contact.
