What the lunar nodes actually are
The lunar nodes are not bodies. They are the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the plane of Earth's orbit — the North Node where it climbs above, the South Node where it drops below. Because they are a geometric intersection rather than an object, they cast no light and have no mass, and eclipses can only happen when a New or Full Moon lands near one.
They move backwards through the zodiac, taking about 18.6 years for a full circuit and roughly eighteen months in each sign. That means your nodal return — the nodes back where they started — lands near 18 or 19, again around 37, and again in the mid-fifties, which is why those ages come up so often in nodal writing. The South Node is always exactly opposite the North: one degree, two ends.
Modern astrology tends to read the North Node as an unfamiliar direction worth growing toward and the South Node as the well-worn groove, while traditional astrology used the nodes much more cautiously and mostly for eclipses. Both are interpretations laid over the same piece of orbital geometry. Umbriel gives you the geometry precisely and offers the reading as a prompt.

Common questions
What is the difference between the True Node and the Mean Node?
The Mean Node is a smoothed average — a steady backwards drift, the same every day. The True Node is where the crossing point actually was at that moment, and it wobbles around the mean by up to about one and a half degrees. That is usually a cosmetic difference, but for a birth near a sign boundary it can put your node in a different sign entirely, which is the most common reason two sites disagree. Umbriel gives the True Node by default and will show you the Mean.
Can the North Node be retrograde or direct?
The Mean Node is defined as always retrograde, so it never varies. The True Node really does turn direct for short stretches several times a year — a real reading rather than a rounding artefact, and Umbriel reports it rather than smoothing it away.
Do I need a birth time for my North Node?
Not for the sign — the nodes move only about three degrees a month, so the date settles it except very close to an ingress. The house the nodal axis falls in needs a time, and that is where most of the interpretation lives.
What is a nodal return?
The nodes returning to their birth positions, which happens about every 18.6 years — so around 18-19, 37, and the mid-fifties. It is one of the few timing markers that lands at roughly the same ages for everyone.
