What it actually is

A sign is thirty degrees wide, and two people with the Sun in Leo can be twenty-nine degrees apart. Degree images are the finest-grained layer of a chart: one image for each of the 360 degrees, so your Sun has a picture nobody one degree away shares.

⚠️ These are Umbriel's own, and that is worth saying plainly. The well-known Sabian Symbols are a copyrighted twentieth-century work, so Umbriel did not reproduce them — it wrote an original set of 360 instead. No line is copied from that work.

They are written as a progression rather than as 360 unrelated pictures: the thirty inside a sign move as an arc from its first degree to its last, and the final image of Pisces hands back to the first of Aries.

⚠️ This is the layer most sensitive to your birth time. The planets barely move in an hour, but the Ascendant crosses a whole degree every four minutes — so if your time is approximate, treat the images for the angles as approximate with it.

How Umbriel computes it

Each planet's exact degree is rounded up to the whole degree it occupies — a body at 14°02′ takes the fifteenth image of its sign — and matched against Umbriel's own set of 360. The thirty images inside a sign are written as a progression rather than as thirty unrelated pictures, so a placement early in a sign and one late in it read as different points in the same arc, and the last image of Pisces hands back to the first of Aries. Because a degree is only 1/360th of the circle, this is the layer of a chart most sensitive to the birth time: the Ascendant moves a whole degree every four minutes, so an approximate birth time gives an approximate image for the angles even while the planets stay put. The set is Umbriel's own throughout: the widely known Sabian Symbols are a copyrighted twentieth-century work, so none of them appears here and no line is adapted from them. Writing 360 fresh images made a structural choice possible that a borrowed set would not have allowed — the thirty inside each sign were composed together, as one arc from the sign's first degree to its last, so neighbouring degrees rhyme instead of standing as unrelated pictures.

Common questions

What is a degree image?

A single evocative image for one specific degree of the zodiac — the finest-grained layer of a chart, at one image per degree.

Are these the Sabian Symbols?

No. The Sabian Symbols are a copyrighted work; Umbriel wrote its own original set of 360 instead, and no line is copied from that work.

Which image does my planet take?

The whole degree it occupies — a planet at 14°02′ takes the fifteenth image of its sign.

Do I need an exact birth time?

For the planets, no. For the Ascendant and Midheaven, yes: the Ascendant moves a full degree every four minutes.

Is the degree image calculator free?

Yes, every placement in your chart, with no account.
