What it actually is
Horary answers a specific question from the chart of the moment the question was asked. It uses no birth data whatsoever, which makes it the odd one out among everything else here — and it is the branch closest to divination, with a long and rigorous technical tradition behind it.
The method assigns significators: the querent takes the ruler of the Ascendant, the thing asked about takes the ruler of the relevant house, and the relationship between those two planets is the answer. A applying aspect between them is traditionally a yes.
⚠️ Before any of that, the tradition applies considerations before judgement — conditions under which the chart is held unfit to read at all. An Ascendant in the first three or last three degrees, the Moon void of course, Saturn in the seventh: each is a traditional reason to decline. Umbriel checks these and says so, rather than producing a confident answer from a chart the tradition would refuse.
Practitioners disagree about how binding the strictures are. Umbriel's position is to show them and let you decide, which is the same position it takes everywhere else there is a genuine dispute.
How Umbriel computes it
The chart is cast for the moment the question is asked at the place you asked from, with no birth data involved anywhere. The significators are assigned from whole-sign or quadrant houses depending on your setting, and applying versus separating is determined from actual planetary speeds rather than assumed direct motion — which matters, because a retrograde significator reverses whether a contact is forming or dissolving. The considerations before judgement are checked mechanically and reported as a list, so the chart tells you when the tradition would decline to read it.
What's in your result
- The chart for the momentCast for when the question was asked, at your location.
- SignificatorsThe ruler of the Ascendant for you, the ruler of the relevant house for the question.
- Considerations before judgementThe traditional strictures, checked and named, including a void-of-course Moon.
- Applying and separating aspectsWhich contacts are forming and which have passed, which is where the answer lives.
- Essential dignityThe condition of each significator, since a strong significator and a weak one do not say the same thing.
Common questions
What is horary astrology?
A branch that answers a specific question from the chart of the moment the question was asked. It uses no birth data at all.
Do I need my birth chart for horary?
No — that is the point of it. Horary uses the moment of the question and the place you asked from, nothing else.
What are the considerations before judgement?
Traditional conditions under which a horary chart is held unfit to read: an Ascendant in the first or last three degrees, a void-of-course Moon, and several others. Umbriel checks and reports them rather than answering anyway.
What makes a horary answer 'yes'?
Classically, an applying aspect between the significator of the querent and the significator of the thing asked about, with both in reasonable condition. It is more involved than that in practice, which is why the chart shows the working.
Is the horary calculator free?
Yes — the chart, the significators and the strictures, with no account and no birth data.
