What it actually is
Secondary progressions take a day of ephemeris time to stand for a year of life. Your chart at age thirty is the sky as it actually looked thirty days after you were born. It is a symbolic move, not a physical one, and it has been in continuous use since at least the seventeenth century.
The technique is slow on purpose. In a whole lifetime the progressed Sun moves through roughly one sign, sometimes two — so a progressed Sun changing sign is a once-in-thirty-years event and is read as one. The progressed Moon is the fast hand: it goes round the whole chart in about twenty-seven and a half years, spending roughly two and a quarter years in each sign, which is why it is the part most people actually follow.
⚠️ Progressions need an accurate birth time. The progressed angles move about a degree a year, so an hour's error in the birth time puts the progressed Midheaven fifteen degrees out — far enough to change which house everything falls in. Umbriel shows the progressed planets whether or not you have a time, and omits the angles when you do not, rather than drawing lines it cannot stand behind.
How Umbriel computes it
The progressed date is your birth moment plus one day for each year of life, including the fraction — so at 40 years and 6 months the chart is cast for 40.5 days after birth, not 40. Positions come from the same engine as the natal chart, so a progressed planet is computed to the same precision as a natal one rather than interpolated from a table. The progressed angles are derived from the progressed Midheaven, which is why they are omitted entirely when there is no birth time: a progressed Ascendant built on a guessed birth hour is a number with nothing behind it.

When is a progression actually 'exact'?
