☊ Free Lunar Node Reading — Your North and South Node as One Loop
Umbriel's free node reading treats your nodal axis as a single self-renewing loop: what you already carry is the fuel, not the baggage. Free, no account.

What it actually is
Popular astrology tends to read the south node as karmic baggage to be escaped and the north node as somewhere you must get to. Umbriel rejects that framing, and it is not being contrary — evolutionary astrology has read the south node as mastery, a resource you draw on for decades.
So the axis is read as an ouroboros: the tail feeds the head. What you are already good at is the fuel for the direction you are growing in. You metabolise the south node; you do not amputate it.
You get both ends — sign, house and ruling planet for each — and the loop between them, rather than one instruction and one accusation.
⚠️ The node is a derived point and amplifies error. Near the node the Moon's latitude runs at roughly eleven times any error underneath it, so a node can be far more wrong than the body it comes from while looking entirely normal. Umbriel's was checked against JPL and corrected: it now sits within a fraction of an arcminute, where it was once out by tens.
How Umbriel computes it
The lunar nodes are computed for the birth moment — the true node, not a mean value for the year — and the axis is read as a single loop rather than two opposed points. The south node's sign, house and ruler are taken as an accumulated resource rather than as karmic debt, and the north node's as the direction that resource is spent in. ⚠️ The node is a derived point and amplifies error: near the node the Moon's latitude runs at about eleven times any error in the underlying position, which is why Umbriel's node was corrected against JPL and now sits within a fraction of an arcminute rather than the tens of arcminutes it once carried. The ruler of each node's sign is followed to its own placement as well, because the axis is usually read through those rulers rather than through the nodes alone — where the south node's ruler sits describes how the resource actually gets used. ⚠️ The node was also once marked retrograde beside a positive speed, because the mark and the speed were measured over different windows; both now come from the same measurement.
What's in your result
- Both nodes in fullSign, house and ruler for each end of the axis.
- Read as one loopThe tail feeding the head, not a debt and a destination.
- The true nodeComputed for your moment, not a mean value for the year.
- A direction, not a verdictSomething to work with rather than a sentence.
Common questions
What are the lunar nodes?
The two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's. They are not bodies — they are intersections, which is why they are called derived points.
Is the south node bad?
No. Evolutionary astrology reads it as mastery and resource — what you already carry — and Umbriel reads it that way too.
What does ouroboros mean here?
The image of a snake eating its own tail: one self-renewing loop. Your south node feeds your north node rather than opposing it.
True node or mean node?
The true node, computed for your birth moment rather than averaged over the year.
Is the node reading free?
Yes, both ends with signs, houses and rulers, and no account.

Umbriel offers every system here as a set of prompts to think with, never as a statement of fact about who you are. Take what's useful, leave the rest.
