What it actually is
Annual profections move the chart forward one whole sign for each year of life. At birth you are in the first house; at one, the second; at twelve you are back in the first, and the cycle repeats every twelve years. The sign on that house gives a ruling planet, and that planet is read as the manager of the year.
The technique's usefulness comes from what it does next. Once you know the year's ruler, you look at where that planet sits in your natal chart, what condition it is in, and what is currently transiting it — a profection turns a whole sky of transits into a shortlist by telling you which planet to care about this year.
It is genuinely simple arithmetic, which is part of the appeal: age modulo twelve gives the house. Umbriel computes the profected house, its sign, the ruler under both traditional and modern rulership, and the ruler's natal placement and current transits.
⚠️ The technique counts from your birthday, not from January. Your profected year turns over on your birthday each year, which means for part of every calendar year you are in the previous profection.
How Umbriel computes it
The profected house is your age in whole years modulo twelve, counted from the Ascendant, with the year turning over on your birthday rather than in January. The ruler is taken from the sign on that house under traditional rulership, with the modern ruler shown alongside wherever the two differ — Umbriel does not silently pick one. The ruler's natal condition and its current transits are then pulled from the same chart engine, so the shortlist you get is computed rather than looked up.

Common questions
What is an annual profection?
A traditional timing technique that advances the chart one whole sign per year of life. Your age modulo twelve gives the house, and the planet ruling that house's sign is read as running the year.
When does my profection year change?
On your birthday, not on 1 January. For part of each calendar year you are still in the previous profected house.
What is a 'lord of the year'?
The planet ruling the sign on your profected house. Its natal condition and its current transits are what the technique directs you to look at.
Do I need a birth time for profections?
Not for the whole-sign profected house, which needs only your birth date and rising sign. A birth time gives you the rising sign, so in practice you want one.
Can I check my profection by hand?
Yes, and that is part of why the technique lasted. Take your age in whole years, divide by twelve, and the remainder is the house counted from your Ascendant — age 34 gives remainder 10, so the 10th house. The sign there gives the year's ruler.
What about monthly profections?
The same idea at a smaller scale: the year is divided into twelve, and each month profects one house further round. Umbriel shows the annual profection, which is the layer most practitioners use, and the monthly one is a straightforward extension of the same arithmetic.
