What it actually is

⚠️ The animal is dated from the Lunar New Year, which most calculators get wrong. The Chinese year does not begin on 1 January — it starts somewhere between late January and late February. Anyone born in that window is very often given the wrong animal by software that simply reads the Gregorian year, and that single error changes every compatibility answer that follows from it.

Each person also carries one of the five elements from the year's stem, so two Tigers born twelve years apart are not the same Tiger.

The traditional reading is grouped rather than scored: the four trines of natural allies, and the six opposition pairs that sit across the wheel from one another. An opposition is not a verdict — it is the pair with the most to teach each other, and the most friction while doing it.

The twelve animals run in a fixed order and the trines are simply every fourth one — Rat, Dragon and Monkey; Ox, Snake and Rooster; Tiger, Horse and Dog; Rabbit, Goat and Pig. Each trine shares a way of going at life rather than a personality, which is why people inside one recognise each other quickly.

The elemental layer then modifies all of it. Five elements across a twelve-animal cycle means the full pattern takes sixty years to repeat, so your grandparent can share your animal and still be a noticeably different version of it. Umbriel shows both, because reading the animal alone throws away more than half of what the system actually says.

How Umbriel computes it

Both animals are found from the actual Lunar New Year rather than the Gregorian year, which is the detail most calculators get wrong: someone born in late January or February often belongs to the previous animal. Each also carries one of the five elements from the year's stem. The pair is then read through the traditional groupings — the four trines of natural allies, and the six opposition pairs — with the elemental relationship layered on top. The New Year boundary is taken from the actual date of the lunar new year for that year rather than approximated to a fixed cut-off, because the date moves by nearly a month across the calendar and any single fixed rule is wrong for roughly one year in three. The element comes from the year's heavenly stem rather than being inferred from the animal, so the full sixty-year sexagenary cycle is respected and a Fire Tiger is correctly distinguished from an Earth Tiger born twelve years earlier.

Common questions

What is my Chinese zodiac sign if I was born in January?

Possibly the previous year's animal. The Chinese year begins at the Lunar New Year, between late January and late February, and Umbriel dates from the real one.

What are the trines?

Four groups of three animals that traditionally get on naturally — allies who share an approach to life.

Is an opposition pair bad?

No. It is the pair with the most friction and the most to teach each other. Umbriel describes it rather than scoring it.

Does the element matter?

Yes — each year carries one of five elements, so two people with the same animal born twelve years apart differ.

Is the Chinese compatibility calculator free?

Yes: both animals, elements and groupings, with no account.
