What Chiron actually is
Chiron was discovered in 1977, orbiting between Saturn and Uranus — too small to be a planet, too odd to be a plain asteroid. It is usually classed as a centaur, a body on an unstable orbit between the giants. Astrologically it is a modern addition, and honest writing about it should say so: nobody was reading Chiron before the late seventies.
Its orbit is what makes it strange to calculate. Chiron takes about fifty years to go round, but on a markedly eccentric path — close in past Saturn at one end, far out near Uranus at the other. It therefore races through the signs it passes at speed and crawls through the ones at the far end. Chiron spent barely eighteen months in some signs and around eight years in others, which is why whole cohorts share a Chiron sign and much smaller ones share another.
It is traditionally — or rather, conventionally, since the tradition is forty years old — associated with a place where hurt and skill sit together: the wounded healer. The more useful framing is less dramatic. Chiron's house tends to describe an area of life you have thought about far more than most people have, usually because you had to. Whether that reads as a wound or as expertise is a question worth sitting with rather than being told.
