Sun-sign compatibility is the shallowest version of a real technique, and it is worth saying so on the page that offers it. Two people are not two signs. Comparing whole charts is called synastry, it looks at every planet against every other, and that is where the information actually is.

What the elements are doing

Sign-pair advice is mostly a statement about elements, this page included. Fire and air feed each other; earth and water hold each other. Same-element pairs understand one another immediately and can lack friction entirely. Pairs three signs apart produce the friction, and quite often the interest. That is the whole of the folk wisdom, and it is not nothing. It is just very coarse.

What a Sun sign cannot see

Your Moon is what you need, and two people's Moons are usually a better guide to whether living together works than their Suns are. Venus is what each of you finds appealing. Mars is how you each pursue, and how you fight. A Sun-sign reading has access to none of that, which is why it so often describes a couple neither person recognises.

The honest limit, which no chart escapes

Astrology describes tendencies in how two people meet. It does not know what either of them has decided, learned, survived, or chosen to do differently. Every pairing called incompatible on this site has happy couples in it, and every perfect match has people who could not stand each other.
