What's new in Umbriel
Umbriel is an astrology app that works in your browser: you can cast a birth chart free, with no account and no email. This page lists what has been added to it, newest first, grouped by the Moon each addition arrived under.

It is written from the same list the app shows in its own Digest, and rebuilt from that list whenever Umbriel is updated, so the two always agree. Repairs are left out here; the Digest inside the app lists those as well.

- Your week. Every Monday, the days that week when a planet is exactly on one of your placements, each with what it is about, the Moon day by day, and a gentle word when nothing big is happening. Members get the whole week, and a notification on Monday mornings; everyone with a chart sees their biggest day on Today.
- A welcome for new members. When your membership arrives you are shown three things to try first, starting with Your week, and asked once whether your week can find you on Mondays.
- The lessons, in French. Set Umbriel to Français and all seventy-three lessons, the glossary, the exam and the course around them come in French: the questions about your own chart, the In your chart notes and the labels on every drawing.
- The lessons, in Spanish. Set Umbriel to Español and all seventy-three lessons, the glossary and the exam come in Spanish, and so does everything around them: the questions about your own chart, the In your chart notes and the labels on every drawing. If a lesson changes in English later, it shows in English and says so until its Spanish catches up.
- The lessons, in German. Set Umbriel to Deutsch and all seventy-three lessons, the glossary and the exam come in German too. If a lesson is changed in English later, it shows in English, and says so, until its German catches up.
- Six thousand asteroids, exact. The first six thousand main-belt asteroids now follow NASA’s own orbit, taken fresh for every four years, so on a chart from 1950 they sit within about a minute of arc of where they really were. Until now that was true of the first two thousand. Past number 6,214, a position can still be more than a degree out, and your file says so.
- More of the lessons in German. With Deutsch on, the quiz about your own chart, the In your chart box and the labels inside the lesson drawings are in German too. And search now finds a lesson by its title, in English or in German.
- The weather says when. Under the emotional weather, the line that names what is moving you now says when it will be exact, like exact 7:26 PM or exact Thursday, while it is still getting closer.
- The full house. On Every calculator, one file, tick both boxes and Umbriel casts everything it knows for one person: every calculator, every persona chart, and two thousand asteroids, now within about a minute of arc of NASA. It opens with a front sheet of what it found and a dated list of the years ahead, lets you pick the house system, and checks its own work before it is written.
- Your chart page, organized. Your birth chart page is organized now, in five parts: you in brief (your Sun, Moon and Rising, and where to start), your chart (the wheel and your dominants), what it means, explore further, and keep and share. Nothing was taken away; the deeper sections are folded until you tap them.
- The Observatory, in one ink. The instruments in the Observatory, the lunar dial, the orrery, the Desk, Living Sky and the rest, are drawn in the app’s own night inks now: paper, a fine line and one red. The gold, teal and pink from an older design are gone, and the small Share buttons are easier to read on the dark.
- Tool pages get to the point. When a tool has already read your saved chart, the top of the page is one line saying whose chart it is, with Change beside it, and the answer starts right under it. The Tropical or Sidereal choice is a single row, and its explanation appears when you switch.
- Umbriel’s own marks. The colourful emoji are gone from the app. The Moon is drawn with its shadow hatched, the Chinese animals wear their own written characters, and every little picture beside a tool, a sound or a life event is drawn in the same ink as the page, so it follows the light and dark plates. The astrological glyphs stay as they are, and so does anything you type yourself.
- It says why. The emotional weather now names what is moving you, like Saturn square your Moon, under its plain words. The day’s lucky and unlucky lists say which Moon they come from. And the free shadow report names Chiron and Saturn where it speaks of your tender place and your inner critic.
- A calmer first visit. The first time you open Umbriel, the first screen now asks you one thing: to cast your chart. The settings and the little New here? pointer wait until your chart is kept, and then come one at a time.
- Save any one section as a file. In Copy anything on this page, every section can now be saved as a file as well as copied, so a long section arrives whole. The unlabeled Send as a file buttons scattered down the chart page are gone.
- Star parans, with the odds first. The speculum now lists which of the fifteen Behenian stars were on an angle with one of your planets as you were born, and says first how many of those meetings chance alone would give.
- Raja and Dhana yogas. The Vedic page finds the classical yogas made by house lords: the Raja yogas, your yogakaraka, and wealth from the lords of the 2nd and 11th, with the verse each comes from, and it says when one is cancelled and why.
- Every calculator, one file, for anyone you have saved. The button on the Charts page used to cast only the chart saved as you, whatever you changed. It has a Whose chart choice now. Pick someone and the whole file is theirs, and your own saved chart is left exactly as it was.
- The zodiac and the house system live on the chart now. They are on the birth form, next to the birth details, and they change that chart rather than quietly switching every chart you ever cast. Twenty-six house systems and both zodiacs, on any chart.
- The living sound has no birds in it. They have gone, and what is left is quieter and less busy.
- The neighbourhood moves at a walking pace rather than a wade, about half again as fast.
- There is a body behind the bodygraph. The figure the centres sit on is traced from an engraving now, drawn faint so the chart stays the thing you read, in the app and on the Human Design page, which describes a bodygraph in full and until now never showed you one.
- Every calculator, one file. For members, one button on the Charts page casts every calculator from your birth details into a single file to keep or share. It says how long it will take, counts down while it runs, and can be stopped. It also lists by name anything it could not include, and what that was waiting for.
- Five more screens can be copied now. Today's reading, your life area by area, this month in your sky, your Arc and the six schools all had something to say and no way to take it with you. Each one has a plain-text copy now, so it can go into your notes, a message, or anywhere else.
- Your chart says what it knows about the angles. Your Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven and IC are in the Planets & Points table now, where you would look for them, each one tappable for its reading. Anything out of bounds says out of bounds in words rather than three letters, with one line under the table explaining what it means.
- One copy button instead of seven. Everything you could copy is still there, behind Copy anything on this page at the top, and a single section now pastes with your name and birth details on it, which it did not always do.
- Signing in is where you expected it. Tap where it says Guest at the top of your account and you are there. It used to be the eleventh thing down that list. The password box will also tell you if Caps Lock is on, show you what you have typed, and ask you to confirm it when you make an account.
- Forgetting your password no longer costs you your journal. Your private things are still encrypted before they leave your browser. We now keep a spare key, held separately, purely so that a password reset can give your writing back to you. The privacy page says exactly what that means, including what it means we could do.
- You can send a page now. Any chart page you have worked out has Send this page at the top. The link opens that same page for whoever you send it to, nothing for them to type, no account. Two-person pages too, which is the one that started this. It tells you first whose birth details travel inside the link.
- Show me around. A walk through the whole app, room by room, at your own pace. Nothing in it is timed, it remembers where you got to, and it lives in the Guide for good. New here? There is a pointer at the eclipse to start you off.
- The search speaks human now. Ask it does he like me, why am I like this, who am I or horoscope and it will take you somewhere useful. It used to want the astrology word for the thing, which is no good if you do not know the word yet.
