What a Chiron return is
A Chiron return is Chiron arriving back at the degree of the zodiac it occupied when you were born. Chiron, found in 1977 between Saturn and Uranus, takes about fifty years to go round the Sun. Read, in modern astrology, as a point of return to an old wound or an old teaching, in the part of the chart natal Chiron occupies. Chiron is a small body whose meaning is a twentieth-century convention, so treat it as a prompt for reflection, not a forecast.
Chiron moves slowly enough that its retrograde, which lasts about five months of every year, usually carries it back over your degree, so most Chiron returns are three passes spread across most of a year.
The detail a single date leaves out is that the return is not always one moment. Chiron retrogrades, so it can cross your degree, back over it, and cross a third time: three exact passes, and every one of them is exact. Umbriel lists every crossing in the window it searches, labels each direct or retrograde, and says which one the return is dated from. Many return calculators give one date; this page does not say what any particular one does, because we have not audited them. It says what Umbriel does and why one date can be too little.

How often it comes, as Umbriel computes it
- Chiron's own lap of the Sun is about fifty years, but that is the lap Umbriel does not use here.
- What Umbriel computes: the return to your tropical zodiac degree as seen from Earth, found by scanning the sky for every crossing of that degree.
- Measured on Umbriel's own engine across 6 natal degrees, searched 1910 to 2090: 18 complete Chiron returns, consecutive returns of one degree 50.0 to 50.8 years apart, 50.3 years on average.
- 67 in every 100 of those returns had more than one exact pass; the longest ran 307 days from first pass to last.
A worked example: every pass
Take someone born on 3 May 1977 at 09:30 UT. This is an invented birth, not anyone's chart. Their natal Chiron is at 2.16° Taurus. Searching from 1 January 2010 to 1 January 2045, Umbriel finds one complete Chiron return with 3 exact passes:
| Pass | Date and time | Motion |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 20 May 2027, 21:00 UT | direct |
| 2 | 29 October 2027, 04:45 UT | retrograde |
| 3 | 20 March 2028, 10:57 UT | direct |
The return is dated from the first pass, 20 May 2027, 21:00 UT, but Chiron crosses the same degree again going backwards on 29 October 2027, 04:45 UT and a third time going forwards on 20 March 2028, 10:57 UT. From first pass to last is 305 days. A calculator that printed only the first date would leave out the other two exact hits.
How Umbriel computes it
This tool finds the moments Chiron comes back to the tropical longitude it held at your birth. Your natal Chiron is computed first, as a tropical longitude, even if your chart is set to sidereal, so the dates are never shifted by the ayanamsa. Umbriel then scans forward from today for 60.5 years (1.2 times Chiron's geocentric period of 50.42 years in the code), sampling Chiron's position in steps of at most 6 days. Wherever the position crosses your natal degree it halves the interval 40 times to pin the moment. Crossings are grouped into one return when they fall within a quarter of a period of each other (about 4,600 days), because Chiron can retrograde back over the degree and cross it three times. The table lists each return dated from its first pass, every pass with its date and time, and marks a return as partial if a pass falls outside the window searched. Chiron's position comes from a numerical integration of its orbit started from JPL orbital elements on a grid about every 25 years. Chiron moves slowly, so its retrograde, about five months of each year, often carries it back over your degree, and most Chiron returns have three passes. Return dates were compared with NASA/JPL Horizons for one invented birth, a thinner check than the inner planets, and the page says so. The dates depend on your birth moment only through your natal Chiron, which moves slowly, but the house it is in needs a birth time. The table shows the next return and the ones after it that fall in the window, not every return since birth.
How it was checked
On 12 October 2026 Umbriel's Chiron return dates were compared with NASA/JPL Horizons (DE441, apparent geocentric ecliptic longitude of date): the body's position at the birth moment gave the target degree, a daily then hourly table from Horizons located every crossing, and each was set beside the engine's. For 1 invented birth that was 3 exact passes, and the largest difference was 6.7 hours. That is a thinner check than the inner planets got, and it is one birth, so treat Chiron's dates as good to the day, not to the minute. What was not checked: returns before 2005 or after 2055, charts cast for the return moment (houses and angles), any birth place, and the sidereal zodiac (return dates are always tropical). Other planets' returns have their own checks and are not covered by this one.
What's in your result
- The next returnsNot only the next one: the ones after it that fall in the window Umbriel searches.
- Every pass, markedEach exact crossing with its date and time, direct or retrograde, so a return split by a retrograde shows all of its passes.
- Which pass it is dated fromNamed, so the date can be checked against any other source.
- Where your natal Chiron sitsSign and degree: the placement the whole return is about.
- The return chartCast for the first exact pass, for your birthplace, opened under its row.
Common questions
How often is a Chiron return?
Chiron takes about fifty years, and consecutive returns in Umbriel's own scan were 50.0 to 50.8 years apart.
Why does my Chiron return have three dates?
Because Chiron retrogrades. When your natal degree falls inside the backward loop, Chiron crosses it going forward, turns back over it, and crosses a third time. All three are exact. Umbriel lists them all, each marked direct or retrograde, and dates the return from the first.
How often does a Chiron return have three passes?
Most of the time. In Umbriel's own scan, 67 in 100 of the complete Chiron returns had three passes, the longest running 307 days from first to last.
What does a Chiron return mean?
Read, in modern astrology, as a point of return to an old wound or an old teaching, in the part of the chart natal Chiron occupies. Chiron is a small body whose meaning is a twentieth-century convention, so treat it as a prompt for reflection, not a forecast.
Do I need my birth time?
For the dates, not really: Chiron moves slowly enough that the day is close either way, and Umbriel dates a return from your natal Chiron degree. For the house the return falls in and the return chart's angles, yes.
How accurate are the dates?
Compared with NASA/JPL Horizons on 12 October 2026, 3 exact Chiron passes for 1 invented birth agreed to within 6.7 hours. Details are on this page, along with what was not checked.
How old are you at a Chiron return?
Close to fifty, but not exactly. Chiron's pace changes round its orbit, so the gap from birth to return depends on your own Chiron degree. In Umbriel's own scan the gaps between returns of a single degree ran from about 50 to 51 years.
Is the Chiron return calculator as checked as the Venus or Mars ones?
Less. Chiron's return dates were compared with NASA/JPL Horizons for one invented birth (three passes), and agreed to within hours, but that is a thinner check than the ones for the inner planets, and the page says so rather than rounding it up.
Is the Chiron return calculator free?
Yes. Every return, every pass and the return chart, with no account and no email.
Do I need an account or an email address?
No account for the chart. There is no sign-up and no email capture. The written reading is part of Membership, and the first seven days of that are free.
