Orbits and speeds: where the timescales come from
Read a planet's orbital period as the length of the chapter it writes, and tell a sidereal period from a synodic one.
Further out is slower, twice over
Orbits are ellipses, not circles, and a body further from the Sun is slower for two reasons at once: it has a longer way to go, and it travels that way at a lower speed. The two effects compound, which is why the outer planets are so very much slower rather than merely somewhat.
Here is the whole cast, as periods. The Moon goes round the Earth in 27.3 days. Mercury goes round the Sun in 88 days, Venus in 225, the Earth in 365¼, Mars in 687 days — about 1.88 years. Then the jump: Jupiter 11.86 years, Saturn 29.46, Uranus 84, Neptune 165, Pluto 248. Chiron, out between Saturn and Uranus on a lopsided orbit, takes about 50.7.
Learn those ten numbers and you have learnt the timing of astrology, because every one of them turns straight into a claim a chart makes.
The period is the chapter
A return is a planet arriving back at the exact degree it occupied when you were born. The famous one is the Saturn return, and it is famous at twenty-nine because Saturn's orbital period is 29.46 years. The age was not chosen. It is the orbit.
Everything else follows the same way. Jupiter comes home every 11.86 years, which is the twelve-year rhythm people notice in their own lives without being told to look. Chiron returns at about fifty. Uranus at eighty-four — reachable, and the reason an eighty-fourth birthday is a genuinely different kind of milestone. Neptune's 165 years and Pluto's 248 mean nobody alive gets a return from either, which is exactly why they read as generational rather than personal: no single life contains one of their cycles.
The same arithmetic sets how long a transit lasts, and this is the part that makes forecasting honest rather than atmospheric. A planet's speed decides how long it sits near one degree. The Moon crosses a sign in about two and a half days; Saturn takes about two and a half years. So the identical aspect — say, a square to your Sun — is a mood when the Moon makes it and a chapter when Saturn does. Module 5 tells you to read the slow ones first. This lesson is why that instruction is arithmetic rather than taste.
It also explains the retrograde triple pass. A slow planet that turns retrograde near your Sun can cross the same degree three times — forward, back, forward — spreading one contact across a year or more. A Saturn return often arrives as three visits rather than one date, and somebody expecting a single dramatic day will conclude nothing happened.
Two kinds of period, and which one you want
There are two honest answers to “how long is a cycle”, and confusing them is one of the commonest slips in amateur work.
A sidereal period is one true orbit, measured against the stars. That is the number in the list above, and it is the one returns use: a Saturn return is Saturn back at your natal degree, so it takes one sidereal period.
A synodic period is measured against the Sun as seen from here: conjunction to conjunction, or one full cycle of retrogrades and stations. It is always longer for an outer planet, because the Earth is moving too. Mars orbits in 687 days but only meets the Sun again every 780, which is why Mars retrogrades roughly every two years and two months rather than every two years. Venus orbits in 225 days and has a synodic cycle of 584 — and five of those make almost exactly eight years, which is the arithmetic behind the eight-year Venus pattern. Mercury's synodic cycle is about 116 days, so it turns retrograde three times most years, which is the entire reason it is the retrograde everyone has heard of.
The Moon has both, and the difference is visible. It returns to the same star in 27.32 days, the sidereal month. It returns to the same phase in 29.53 days, the synodic month, because the Sun moved on and the Moon has to catch it up. When somebody says “a lunar month”, they almost always mean the second one.
What that looks like
Saturn's period is 29.46 years, so the first Saturn return lands between about 28 and 30 depending where in its slightly elliptical orbit your natal Saturn sits. The second falls near 59, the third near 88. If a chart has Saturn near a station, the return arrives as three passes across eighteen months or more rather than a single week, and the person living it experiences a long grinding chapter rather than an event. Nothing symbolic has been added to get any of that. It is one orbital period and one retrograde loop.
What to take away
- Further from the Sun means slower twice over: a longer path travelled at lower speed, which is why the outer planets are dramatically rather than slightly slower.
- A return takes one sidereal period, so the Saturn return is at 29–30 because Saturn's orbit is 29.46 years. The age was never chosen.
- Speed sets duration: the same aspect is a mood from the Moon and a chapter from Saturn, and a slow planet can cross one degree three times.
- Sidereal period is one true orbit; synodic period is conjunction to conjunction with the Sun, and it is what sets the rhythm of retrogrades and of the lunar phases.
The common mistake
Reading an outer-planet transit as though it would pass like a lunar one — expecting a day when the arithmetic says a year or three. The other half of the same error is expecting a Saturn return to be an event with a date, when for most charts it is three passes and a long middle.

Divide your age by 29.46 and note the remainder — that tells you roughly where you are between Saturn returns. Then divide by 11.86 for Jupiter, and by 50.7 for Chiron. Write down the ages your next two Jupiter returns fall on. Then look at what was happening at the last one. It is longer than the sidereal period for an outer planet because the Earth has moved too. Mars: 687 days sidereal, 780 synodic — which is why Mars retrogrades every 26 months rather than every 23.
