What it actually is
An eclipse is a New or Full Moon close enough to the lunar nodes for the three bodies to line up. Solar eclipses are New Moons that cover the Sun; lunar eclipses are Full Moons passing through the Earth's shadow.
Astrologically the interest is rarely the eclipse itself and almost always where it falls. An eclipse at 14° Virgo means one thing in the abstract and something much more specific if 14° Virgo is your Ascendant — which is why a list of dates is nearly useless without a chart to put them against.
The saros series is the long pattern behind them: eclipses repeat in families roughly every eighteen years and eleven days, each series running for over a thousand years before it ends. Practitioners who work with eclipses often trace a series rather than reading each one alone.
