The lunar nodes: your growth axis
Explain the South and North Nodes as a past-comfort / growth-direction axis.
Not planets: an axis
The lunar nodes aren't bodies; they're the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's. They always sit exactly opposite each other, forming an axis. The South Node is what's familiar and over-practised. Your comfort zone and default. The North Node is your growth direction: unfamiliar, a little uncomfortable, and exactly what nourishes you.
Where they actually come from
The nodes are not objects and nothing is there. They are the two points where the Moon's tilted orbit crosses the Sun's apparent path — and knowing that explains a great deal about why they carry the meaning they do.
The Moon's orbit is tilted about five degrees to the ecliptic, so for half its month the Moon rides above that line and for half below. Twice a month it crosses. Those two crossing points are the nodes: North where it passes upward, South where it passes down. They are always exactly opposite, because they are two ends of one line through the middle.
And here is the fact that gives them their weight: eclipses can only happen at the nodes. A New or Full Moon is an eclipse only if it happens close enough to a crossing for the three bodies to line up in space as well as in longitude. So the nodal axis is the one place in the chart where the Sun, Moon and Earth can be genuinely in a straight line — the doorway where the lights get interrupted. Every ancient tradition treats that as significant, and this is why.
One practical note. The nodes drift backwards through the zodiac, about one sign every eighteen months, completing a circuit in roughly 18.6 years. That is the nodal return, and it lands near 18–19, 37, 55 and 74 — ages people describe as reorientations without knowing why. ⚠️ There are also two versions: the mean node, a smoothed average, and the true node, which wobbles and occasionally moves forward. Lean north
Read them as a journey: you're learning to lean out of easy South-Node habits toward North-Node qualities. It rarely feels natural at first, that resistance is the whole point. The North Node's sign and house describe what your life keeps nudging you to develop.

South Node in Gemini / North Node in Sagittarius: someone who defaults to gathering endless facts and opinions (Gemini) but grows by trusting a bigger picture and their own conviction (Sagittarius).
