Two clocks, and why the Ascendant moves a degree every four minutes
Distinguish the solar day from the sidereal day, and use the resulting rate to say honestly how much of a chart an uncertain birth time actually puts in doubt.
The day that is not twenty-four hours
Ask how long the Earth takes to turn once and you get two different right answers, because there are two different things you could be turning to face again.
Turn until the same star is back in the same place and you have a sidereal day: 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds. That is one honest rotation of the planet.
Turn until the Sun is back in the same place and you have a solar day: 24 hours. It takes longer because while the Earth was spinning it also moved about one degree further round its orbit, so it has to turn that extra degree to point at the Sun again. One degree is about four minutes of turning.
Four minutes a day, over a year, is exactly one whole extra rotation: the Earth turns 366¼ times while the Sun comes round 365¼ times. Nothing in astronomy is a coincidence twice, and this is the same fact seen from two ends.
Sidereal time is the chart's real clock
Your houses are not built from the time on the wall. They are built from local sidereal time: which degree of the ecliptic is crossing your meridian, the north–south line overhead, at the moment in question.
Do the division and you get the number this whole course keeps leaning on. Three hundred and sixty degrees in a sidereal day is about fifteen degrees an hour, which is one degree every four minutes. The Midheaven is read almost directly off sidereal time and moves at very nearly that rate.
The Ascendant is the ecliptic's crossing with your horizon, which depends on sidereal time and on your latitude, so it does not move at a constant rate — some signs heave themselves over the horizon slowly and others shoot up. The next module takes that properly. But a degree every four minutes is the right order of magnitude everywhere, and it is the number to reason with.
One small bonus falls out of the four minutes. Because sidereal time runs ahead of clock time by four minutes a day, any given Rising sign happens four minutes earlier each day, half an hour earlier each week, and two hours earlier each month. That is why the same birth time a month later gives a different Ascendant.
What an uncertain birth time actually costs
Now you can price a doubt instead of worrying about it, which is the difference between an astrologer and an anxious person with software.
The Sun moves about one degree a day. The Ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes. The Ascendant is therefore roughly three hundred and sixty times more sensitive to the clock than the Sun is. That single ratio explains why a Sun sign survives a lost birth certificate and a Rising sign does not.
So take a birth time given as “about three in the afternoon, could be half an hour either way”. Half an hour either way is a whole hour of uncertainty, which is about fifteen degrees of Ascendant: half a sign. Your Rising sign is probably right, your Rising degree is not, and any house cusp that lands within fifteen degrees of a planet is genuinely undecided.
The professional move is to say that out loud. Name the range rather than the point, read what survives across the whole range, and treat anything that flips inside it as an open question. Twins forty minutes apart differ by about ten degrees of Ascendant, which is often enough to move one planet into a different house and change which story the chart tells. And when the time is properly unknown, there is a technique for working backwards from events to a likely time — rectification, in Module 15. It exists because this lesson's number is real.
What that looks like
Two charts, same date, same city, born forty minutes apart. Every planet is in the same sign and within a fraction of a degree of the other's, because in forty minutes nothing out there moves. But the Ascendant has advanced about ten degrees, every house cusp with it, and a planet sitting at 27° of a sign has quietly crossed from the twelfth house into the first. One chart reads as a private person with a hidden inner life; the other reads as someone the room notices. Same sky, forty minutes, different rooms.

Reading a rounded or remembered birth time as though it were exact, then building a whole delineation on a house cusp that the uncertainty could move. The chart is not wrong; the input has a tolerance, and a good reading states it.
