What the Ascendant actually is
Your rising sign, or Ascendant, is not a planet. It is the degree of the zodiac that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place you were born. The whole zodiac rises in a day, so the Ascendant is the fastest-moving thing in a chart by a wide margin — two people born the same morning in the same hospital can have different ones.
That makes it the most local placement you have. The planets were where they were regardless of who was watching; the horizon is yours. It is also structural rather than descriptive: the Ascendant sets the first house, and every other house follows from it. Change the Ascendant and every planet moves to a different house, which changes what the whole chart is about. This is why astrologers ask for a birth time before anything else.
Traditionally the Ascendant is associated with the approach — the manner someone arrives with, the body, the first impression, the doorway rather than the room. Its ruling planet, the chart ruler, is often read as a signature for the chart as a whole. Take all of it as a lens rather than a label; plenty of people do not recognise their rising sign, and that is a legitimate result too.

Don’t know your birth time?
Umbriel does not fill the gap with a guess. Tick “I don’t know the exact time” and it checks your whole birthday, hour by hour, then tells you two things: which placements are the same whatever time you were born — as exact as they would be if you knew the minute — and which are down to two signs, both named, so you know what a parent’s memory would settle.
The Ascendant, the Midheaven and the houses are left out rather than approximated. A birth time is the one thing they cannot be computed without, and an approximate Rising sign that looks exact is worse than no Rising sign at all.
Common questions
Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?
No — and any site that hands you one anyway has guessed. The Ascendant moves about a degree every four minutes and through a whole sign roughly every two hours, so a chart cast for noon tells you nothing about it. Umbriel leaves it blank rather than filling it in. If you can narrow your birth down to a couple of hours, birth-time rectification is the honest way to work with an uncertain time.
Why do two websites give me different rising signs?
The usual culprit is the time zone. The chart must use the zone of the birth city on the birth date — including the daylight-saving rule actually in force that year, which older tables often get wrong. Umbriel takes the zone from your birth place, not from the device you are holding. A birth within a few minutes of a sign change will also differ between sources that round differently.
Is the rising sign the same as the Ascendant?
Yes, exactly the same thing. "Ascendant" is the technical term and "rising sign" the everyday one: the Ascendant is a precise degree, and the rising sign is simply the sign that degree falls in.
Does the house system change my rising sign?
No. Every house system in common use puts the Ascendant on the first house cusp, so the rising sign is the same in all of them. What changes is where the other eleven cusps fall — which is why the same chart can show a planet in the 9th house on one site and the 10th on another.
