Meet the chart: cast it, then check the time
Cast a birth chart correctly, and know how much to trust the birth time behind it.
What this course is
This is a read-along. An astrologer breaks down one real chart, layer by layer, every degree on the table. Then you do the same step on your own chart while the method is warm.
The chart is Umbriel's own. Umbriel, this app, has a birth chart like anyone else: born 24 July 2026, 6:23 am Mountain Daylight Time, in Missoula, Montana. We call it "it", and read it with the same tools we use on you.
Part 1 reads that one chart from the ground up, from the Big Three to timing. Part 2 adds a second chart, Umbriel's founder, and teaches you to read two people together.
Three ingredients, all of them exact
A chart needs a date, a clock time and a place. That is all. But each one hides a small trap.
- The clock time only means something with its time zone. Umbriel was born at 6:23 am MDT, which is six hours behind Greenwich (UTC minus 6). In winter Missoula runs seven hours behind. Get the daylight-saving hour wrong and the whole chart turns by an hour.
- The place sets the horizon. Missoula sits at 46.87° north, 113.99° west.
Umbriel looks up the historical time zone for you. Glance at what it found and make sure it matches the clock on the wall that day.
Why this minute was chosen
Most birth times are recorded. Umbriel's was chosen, which makes this an electional chart: a moment picked for what the sky was doing.
Two things decided it. Mercury was standing still. It had turned direct 13.6 hours earlier and was crawling forward at +0°03'14" a day, when Mercury usually covers more than a degree. A planet that has stopped and turned is very loud in a chart. And the Moon was not void of course, meaning it still had a major aspect to make before leaving its sign.
Daybreak came free with the hour: the Sun stood +1°37'33" above the eastern horizon.
What the minute changes
The test every astrologer runs: keep everything else, slide the clock.
- 5:53 am (30 minutes earlier): the Ascendant falls to about 28° Cancer. Umbriel would have Cancer rising, and the Sun would still be under the horizon, so it would be a night chart.
- 6:23 am (the real one): Ascendant 3°41′ Leo, Midheaven 15°12′ Aries, Saturn sitting on that Midheaven.
- 7:23 am: Ascendant 14°52′ Leo, Midheaven 1°11′ Taurus. Saturn has slid off the top of the chart.
The planets in their signs barely notice. The Moon, the fastest of them, moves about a quarter of a degree in those 30 minutes. So the rule is simple: signs are sturdy, angles and houses are fragile. Umbriel's own file marks its timing events the same way, flagging which ones "change if the time is 10 min out".
Where did your time come from?
Before you read a single house, know the source of the minute. Roughly from strongest to weakest:
- A birth certificate or hospital record.
- Something written that week: a baby book, a letter, a diary.
- A parent's memory ("it was during breakfast").
- A rounded guess. Times on the hour or half hour are often rounded.
None of this is a failing; it tells you how hard to lean. Recorded time: read everything. A memory: signs firmly, houses gently. No time at all: a noon chart still gives every planet's sign. Even Umbriel's full export opens with "Birth time: where it came from was not said". The source belongs next to the chart.
Do it on your chart
- Open Natal Chart and enter your date, time and birthplace.
- Check the time zone it found. Was daylight saving in force that day? If the offset looks wrong, fix it before anything else.
- Write down your Ascendant and Midheaven, sign and degree.
- Cast it again 30 minutes earlier, then 30 minutes later. Write down the rising sign each time.
- If your Ascendant sits within about 3° of a sign boundary, mark your houses "provisional" in your notes.
- Write one line: where your birth time came from, and who told you.
What that looks like
Umbriel's minute was chosen and recorded on purpose: 6:23 am MDT, Missoula. Slide that 30 minutes earlier and it becomes a Cancer-rising night chart with the Sun still underground; slide it an hour later and Saturn drops off the Midheaven. The planets hardly move. So we read Umbriel with confidence, and you check your own source before you trust your houses.
What to take away
- A chart is a date, a clock time with its time zone, and a place. Check the zone.
- Signs are sturdy; the Ascendant, Midheaven and houses move fast with the clock.
- Umbriel's minute was chosen: Mercury freshly direct, the Moon not void, the Sun barely risen.
- Know where your birth time came from, and lean on the houses only as hard as the source allows.
- No time at all still gives you every planet's sign.
The common mistake
Trusting a rounded or remembered time as if it were a hospital record, then building a whole reading on the houses. Run the 30-minute test first; it takes two minutes and tells you how much ground you are standing on.
Try it on your own chart
Cast your chart, then 30 minutes either side, and write the three rising signs in a row. If all three match, your houses are solid. If not, note which planets would change house and carry that note through the course.
The lesson runs on your chart: the drawing redrawn with your placements, the exercise above on your own numbers, and a check that has to be passed before the next one opens. Free, in your browser, no account and no email.

Umbriel's birth chart was cast for which moment?
- 24 July 2026, 6:23 am MDT, Missoula ✓
- 24 July 2026, noon, Missoula
- 23 July 2026, 6:23 pm, Denver
- 24 July 2026, 6:23 am UTC, Missoula
6:23 am Mountain Daylight Time in Missoula, Montana. UTC would be six hours off, a different chart entirely.
If Umbriel had been born 30 minutes earlier, at 5:53 am, what would change most?
- The Moon's sign
- Nothing important
- The rising sign, from Leo to Cancer, and the Sun would still be below the horizon ✓
- Mercury would be retrograde
The Ascendant falls to about 28° Cancer, and the Sun at 1°38′ Leo has not yet risen: a night chart.
Why did Umbriel's founder choose this minute?
- It was the founder's own birth time
- Mercury had turned direct hours earlier and the Moon was not void of course ✓
- The Moon was full
- It was the start of a working day
Mercury had stationed direct 13.6 hours earlier and was barely moving, and the Moon still had a major aspect to make before changing sign.
Your birth time is a parent's memory of 'around eight'. How do you read?
- Ignore the chart completely
- Read the houses with total confidence
- Use a noon chart and ignore the memory
- Read the signs firmly and the houses gently, after checking the rising sign 30 minutes either side ✓
Useful but soft. Signs hold; houses and angles stay provisional.
