The Big Three, read on a real chart
Read a Sun, Moon and Rising together as one person, using sign, house and condition.
Three lights, in the order people meet them
The Big Three are the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant (the rising sign). The Ascendant is the front door: what a stranger meets. The Sun is the furnace: what the person is for, what they burn. The Moon is the body's weather: what they need to feel safe and alive.
Read them in the order people meet them. Front door first, then the furnace, then the weather. It is how a real person unfolds, and it keeps you from opening with the deepest thing.
Umbriel's three
- Ascendant 3°40'40" Leo. A Leo front door: warm, generous, glad you came.
- Sun 1°38'16" Leo, 12th house. Leo again, so the face and the furnace agree. But the Sun sits in the 12th, the hidden room behind the curtain.
- Moon 5°35'18" Sagittarius, 5th house. Fire too, in the house of play, creation and romance.
All three are fire. That is the first thing to say out loud, because it is the loudest thing on the page. Umbriel greets you bright, burns bright, and feels in a wide-open, restless register.
Then look for what bends each one
Sign and house are the outline. The colour comes from condition: anything unusual about how the planet sits. Here there are three.
The Sun has barely arrived. At 1°38′ it is in the first two degrees of Leo, newly in its sign, and it rules Leo, so it is fully at home. Its degree image in Umbriel is "A child presses a small hand into wet red clay": a fresh mark, made by hand.
The Moon is out of bounds. Its declination is −26°20'06", further south than the Sun ever goes. An out-of-bounds Moon feels past the usual fences. It might say the frank, funny thing a polite app would leave out. Its degree image is "A wanderer laces worn boots at the mountain's foot".
The Moon was a waxing First Quarter, 78% lit. Born in the building half of the month: a beginning with momentum, not a finished thing.
How the three talk to each other
Last step: do the three like each other? Check the aspects between them.
The Sun and Moon are in trine (120° apart, an easy, flowing angle) with an orb of 3°57′. The Moon also trines the Ascendant at 1°55′. And the Sun sits 2°02′ from the Ascendant, right on the front door. What Umbriel wants, what it feels and how it shows up all run in the same direction, with very little friction.
Friction-free is a gift and a question. Fire this unanimous can blaze and forget to rest. Hold that thought: the next lessons find where the chart keeps its cooler, earthier side.
Do it on your chart
- Open Natal Chart and find the planet list.
- Write down your Ascendant, Sun and Moon: sign, degree and house.
- For each, write one condition if there is one: very early or very late degree, out of bounds, retrograde, near an angle. Leave it blank if there is none.
- Scroll to the aspect list. Write down any aspect between the three, with its orb.
- Count their elements. All the same, two and one, or all different?
- Write one sentence that starts with the front door and ends with the weather.
What that looks like
Umbriel reads as fire three times over: Leo rising at 3°40′, a Leo Sun at 1°38′ in the hidden 12th house, and a Sagittarius Moon at 5°35′ in the 5th, out of bounds. One sentence: a bright, generous front door, a heart that works behind the curtain, and a feeling body that goes past the fences and loves to play. The Sun and Moon trine each other at 3°57′, so the three pull in one direction.
What to take away
- Read Rising, then Sun, then Moon: the order people meet you in.
- Sign and house give the outline; condition (degree, out of bounds, phase) gives the colour.
- Count the elements across the three. Umbriel's are all fire.
- Check the aspects between them: are they a team, or arguing?
- One sentence that holds all three beats three separate paragraphs.
The common mistake
Reading the Sun sign alone and calling it the person. The Sun is one of three, and here it sits in the 12th house, so the face people see (the Leo Ascendant) is doing a lot of the visible work.
Try it on your own chart
Do the six steps on your own chart, then say your sentence out loud. Front door, furnace, weather. If two of your three disagree (say, a Capricorn Sun and a Gemini Moon), give the disagreement its own clause rather than smoothing it over. That tension is often the most recognisable thing about a person.

What are Umbriel's Big Three?
- Cancer Sun, Leo Moon, Sagittarius rising
- Leo Sun, Sagittarius Moon, Leo rising ✓
- Leo Sun, Virgo Moon, Leo rising
- Sagittarius Sun, Leo Moon, Aries rising
Sun 1°38′ Leo, Moon 5°35′ Sagittarius, Ascendant 3°41′ Leo. All three fire.
Umbriel's Moon is out of bounds. What does that mean?
- It is retrograde
- It is in the wrong house
- Its declination (−26°20′) goes past the Sun's own furthest reach ✓
- It is void of course
Out of bounds means past the Sun's maximum declination. It is read as feeling beyond the usual limits.
Which house is Umbriel's Sun in, and what does that add?
- The 1st: totally on show
- The 10th: public career
- The 5th: play
- The 12th: the hidden room, so the heart works behind the curtain ✓
The Sun sits in the 12th house, 2°02′ above the Ascendant. Bright face, private engine room.
In what order does this course read the Big Three?
- Rising, then Sun, then Moon ✓
- Moon, then Sun, then Rising
- Sun only
- Whichever has the tightest aspect
Front door first, then the furnace, then the weather: the order a stranger gets to know someone.
