Saturn takes about 29.5 years to circle the sky, so somewhere around 29 it arrives back where it was when you were born.

What a Saturn return is
A Saturn return is exactly what it sounds like: transiting Saturn arriving back at the degree it occupied at your birth. The first lands somewhere between 27 and 31 depending on Saturn's speed at the time, the second around 58 to 60, the third near 88.
Saturn is traditionally associated with structure, limits, responsibility and time, so its return has a reputation as the moment the scaffolding gets tested. In practice people often describe the period around it as one where things built on unstable ground come apart, and things built properly hold. Careers, relationships and living situations tend to be where it shows.
Two details most summaries miss. First, Saturn usually retrogrades through the degree, so the return often happens three times across a year or more, not once, which is why it can feel like a chapter, not a date. Second, where it lands matters enormously. The house and sign of your natal Saturn shape what part of life is under review. That's the part a generic 'you're 29' article can't tell you.
It's worth holding all of this as a prompt, not a prophecy. Plenty of people pass 29 without drama. The useful question isn't what Saturn will do to you. It's which structures in your life you already suspect aren't load-bearing.
How Umbriel computes it
Your natal Saturn is worked out first, as a tropical longitude, from the same series that draw every chart on this site. Umbriel then walks Saturn forward from your birth in 16-day steps and, wherever it crosses that degree, halves the gap until the moment is pinned. It searches two windows, about 2.3 years either side of 29.5 and of 59 years after birth (the first and second returns), and keeps every crossing it finds, because Saturn usually turns retrograde over the degree and crosses it up to three times. Saturn's position includes the Jupiter–Saturn perturbation terms, which reach 0.7°; without them a date could be out by weeks. Against NASA/JPL Horizons the outer planets are within 2.5 arcseconds (checked 1910–2044), and Saturn moves about 2 arcminutes a day, so a crossing date is good to well inside a day across that range. The date does not depend much on your birth time: an unknown time moves your natal Saturn by less than a day's travel, so the dates move by less than a day. The house it falls in does depend on it, because houses come from the Ascendant. Sidereal charts are compared in the tropical zodiac, so the two never drift apart by the ayanamsa.
What's in your result
- Your exact datesCalculated from your own natal Saturn, not the average age.
- The triple hitMost returns include a retrograde pass, so the contact repeats, often three times over a year or more.
- The house it falls inWhich area of life is under review: work, home, relationship, health, belief.
- Natal Saturn's signThe style of the whole thing: how the pressure tends to arrive and what it asks for.
- Second and third returnsAround 58-60 and 88: traditionally read as later structural reckonings.
What this calculator answers
The dates Saturn comes back to the exact degree it held at your birth, around ages 29 to 30 and 58 to 59.
How it calculates
Umbriel works out your natal Saturn, then steps Saturn forward 16 days at a time through a window of about 2.3 years either side of each return, and narrows each crossing by repeated halving. Every crossing is kept, because Saturn can turn retrograde over the degree and cross it more than once.
When the result is uncertain
The dates rest on your birth date; the birth time hardly moves them. The house the return falls in does need your time. "Return" is read here as the exact degree in the tropical zodiac, even on a sidereal chart.
Common questions
At what age is your Saturn return?
Usually between 27 and 31, most often around 29 and a half. The exact age depends on how fast Saturn was moving when you were born, which is why a calculated date beats the rule of thumb.
How long does a Saturn return last?
The exact contact is brief, but because Saturn typically retrogrades back over the same degree, the whole passage commonly spans a year to eighteen months. Many people describe the surrounding period as the real event.
Is a Saturn return always difficult?
No. It's traditionally associated with tested structures, and if what you've built holds, it can read as consolidation, not crisis. The reputation comes from how memorable the harder version is.
Do I need my birth time?
For the dates themselves, not really. Saturn moves slowly enough that the date is close regardless. For the house it falls in, which is the genuinely useful part, yes.
Do I need an account or an email address?
No account for the chart. There is no sign-up and no email capture. The written reading is part of Membership, and the first seven days of that are free.
