What a Venus return is

Venus, plate five from The Seven Planets with the Zodiacs, Sebald Beham, 1539. Art Institute of Chicago, public domain.

A Venus return is Venus arriving back at the degree of the zodiac it occupied when you were born. Venus takes 224.7 days to go round the Sun, but you are watching from Earth, which is moving too, and Venus never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun in our sky. Read as a restart for what you value, who and how you love, and how you spend money, attention and time, in the part of the chart natal Venus occupies. It is a reflective reading, not a forecast.

Because Venus stays within about 47 degrees of the Sun, its returns come in the months when the Sun is within that distance of your natal Venus degree, which is why there is roughly one a year.

The detail a single date leaves out is that the return is not always one moment. Venus retrogrades, so it can cross your degree, back over it, and cross a third time: three exact passes, and every one of them is exact. Umbriel lists every crossing in the window it searches, labels each direct or retrograde, and says which one the return is dated from. Many return calculators give one date; this page does not say what any particular one does, because we have not audited them. It says what Umbriel does and why one date can be too little.

How often it comes, as Umbriel computes it

A worked example: every pass

Take someone born on 8 September 1978 at 09:30 UT. This is an invented birth, not anyone's chart. Their natal Venus is at 1.05° Scorpio. Searching from 1 June 2026 to 1 September 2027, Umbriel finds one complete Venus return with 3 exact passes:

Venus return, every exact pass
PassDate and timeMotion
111 September 2026, 23:39 UTdirect
223 October 2026, 15:29 UTretrograde
35 December 2026, 22:53 UTdirect

The return is dated from the first pass, 11 September 2026, 23:39 UT, but Venus crosses the same degree again going backwards on 23 October 2026, 15:29 UT and a third time going forwards on 5 December 2026, 22:53 UT. From first pass to last is 85 days. A calculator that printed only the first date would leave out the other two exact hits.

How Umbriel computes it

This tool finds the moments Venus comes back to the tropical longitude it held at your birth. Your natal Venus is computed first, as a tropical longitude, even if your chart is set to sidereal, so the dates are never shifted by the ayanamsa. Umbriel then scans forward from today for 1.2 years (1.2 times Venus's geocentric period of one year in the code), sampling Venus's position in steps of at most 3.1 days. Wherever the position crosses your natal degree it halves the interval 40 times to pin the moment. Crossings are grouped into one return when they fall within a quarter of a period of each other (about 91 days), because Venus can retrograde back over the degree and cross it three times. The table lists each return dated from its first pass, every pass with its date and time, and marks a return as partial if a pass falls outside the window searched. The period is geocentric, not orbital: seen from Earth, Venus goes round the zodiac about once a year alongside the Sun, so 224.7 days, its lap of the Sun, is not used. Venus's position comes from compact orbital elements (Kepler's equation solved for the moment asked), not from the VSOP87D series the outer planets use, so it is less precise on paper than Jupiter's; the accuracy page quotes under 0.2 degrees against published ingress dates, and for return dates the page records a comparison with NASA/JPL Horizons. The dates depend on your birth moment only through your natal Venus, but the house it is in needs a birth time. The table shows the next return and the ones after it that fall in the window, not every return since birth.

How it was checked

On 12 October 2026 Umbriel's Venus return dates were compared with NASA/JPL Horizons (DE441, apparent geocentric ecliptic longitude of date): the body's position at the birth moment gave the target degree, a daily then hourly table from Horizons located every crossing, and each was set beside the engine's. For 3 invented births that was 11 exact passes, and the largest difference was 21 minutes. What was not checked: returns before 2005 or after 2055, charts cast for the return moment (houses and angles), any birth place, and the sidereal zodiac (return dates are always tropical). Other planets' returns have their own checks and are not covered by this one.

Common questions

How often is a Venus return?

About once a year as seen from Earth. Venus's own lap of the Sun is 224.7 days, but the return is to a degree of the zodiac, and because Earth moves too, consecutive returns in Umbriel's own scan fell 292 to 411 days apart, 366 on average.

Why does my Venus return have three dates?

Because Venus retrogrades. When your natal degree falls inside the backward loop, Venus crosses it going forward, turns back over it, and crosses a third time. All three are exact. Umbriel lists them all, each marked direct or retrograde, and dates the return from the first.

How often does a Venus return have three passes?

Not often. In Umbriel's own scan of 493 complete Venus returns, 2 in 100 had more than one pass, the longest running 88 days from first to last. Most returns are a single date, and Umbriel shows that too.

What does a Venus return mean?

Read as a restart for what you value, who and how you love, and how you spend money, attention and time, in the part of the chart natal Venus occupies. It is a reflective reading, not a forecast.

Do I need my birth time?

For the dates, not really: Venus moves slowly enough that the day is close either way, and Umbriel dates a return from your natal Venus degree. For the house the return falls in and the return chart's angles, yes.

How accurate are the dates?

Compared with NASA/JPL Horizons on 12 October 2026, 11 exact Venus passes for 3 invented births agreed to within 21 minutes. Details are on this page, along with what was not checked.

Is a Venus return every 224.7 days?

No. 224.7 days is how long Venus takes to go round the Sun. A Venus return as astrologers use it is Venus coming back to a degree of the zodiac as seen from Earth, and because Earth is moving too that happens about once a year on average, not every 224.7 days. Umbriel does not compute the heliocentric 224.7-day lap.

Is my Venus return the same as my birthday?

No, though it often falls within a few months of it, because Venus is never far from the Sun. It lands on its own date, which is why the calculator gives you the exact moment rather than a month.

Is the Venus return calculator free?

Yes. Every return, every pass and the return chart, with no account and no email.

Do I need an account or an email address?

No account for the chart. There is no sign-up and no email capture. The written reading is part of Membership, and the first seven days of that are free.
