What a Mercury return is

Mercury, plate six from The Seven Planets with the Zodiacs, Sebald Beham, 1539. Art Institute of Chicago, public domain.

A Mercury return is Mercury arriving back at the degree of the zodiac it occupied when you were born. Mercury takes 88 days to go round the Sun, but you are watching from Earth, which is moving too, and Mercury never strays more than about 28 degrees from the Sun in our sky. Read as a restart for how you think, talk, learn and get about, in the part of the chart natal Mercury occupies. It is a reflective reading, not a forecast.

Because Mercury stays within about 28 degrees of the Sun, its returns come in the weeks when the Sun is near your natal Mercury degree, which is why there is roughly one a year, close to your birthday month.

The detail a single date leaves out is that the return is not always one moment. Mercury retrogrades, so it can cross your degree, back over it, and cross a third time: three exact passes, and every one of them is exact. Umbriel lists every crossing in the window it searches, labels each direct or retrograde, and says which one the return is dated from. Many return calculators give one date; this page does not say what any particular one does, because we have not audited them. It says what Umbriel does and why one date can be too little.

How often it comes, as Umbriel computes it

A worked example: every pass

Take someone born on 26 October 1976 at 09:30 UT. This is an invented birth, not anyone's chart. Their natal Mercury is at 25.29° Libra. Searching from 1 June 2027 to 1 June 2028, Umbriel finds one complete Mercury return with 3 exact passes:

Mercury return, every exact pass
PassDate and timeMotion
122 September 2027, 11:47 UTdirect
220 October 2027, 05:51 UTretrograde
36 November 2027, 09:21 UTdirect

The return is dated from the first pass, 22 September 2027, 11:47 UT, but Mercury crosses the same degree again going backwards on 20 October 2027, 05:51 UT and a third time going forwards on 6 November 2027, 09:21 UT. From first pass to last is 45 days. A calculator that printed only the first date would leave out the other two exact hits.

How Umbriel computes it

This tool finds the moments Mercury comes back to the tropical longitude it held at your birth. Your natal Mercury is computed first, as a tropical longitude, even if your chart is set to sidereal, so the dates are never shifted by the ayanamsa. Umbriel then scans forward from today for 1.2 years (1.2 times Mercury's geocentric period of one year in the code), sampling Mercury's position in steps of at most 1.8 days. Wherever the position crosses your natal degree it halves the interval 40 times to pin the moment. Crossings are grouped into one return when they fall within a quarter of a period of each other (about 91 days), because Mercury can retrograde back over the degree and cross it three times. The table lists each return dated from its first pass, every pass with its date and time, and marks a return as partial if a pass falls outside the window searched. The period is geocentric, not orbital: seen from Earth, Mercury goes round the zodiac about once a year alongside the Sun, so 88 days, its lap of the Sun, is not used. Mercury's position comes from compact orbital elements (Kepler's equation solved for the moment asked), not from the VSOP87D series the outer planets use, so it is less precise on paper than Jupiter's; the accuracy page quotes under 0.2 degrees against published ingress dates, and for return dates the page records a comparison with NASA/JPL Horizons. The dates depend on your birth moment only through your natal Mercury, but the house it is in needs a birth time. The table shows the next return and the ones after it that fall in the window, not every return since birth.

How it was checked

On 12 October 2026 Umbriel's Mercury return dates were compared with NASA/JPL Horizons (DE441, apparent geocentric ecliptic longitude of date): the body's position at the birth moment gave the target degree, a daily then hourly table from Horizons located every crossing, and each was set beside the engine's. For 2 invented births that was 9 exact passes, and the largest difference was 14 minutes. What was not checked: returns before 2005 or after 2055, charts cast for the return moment (houses and angles), any birth place, and the sidereal zodiac (return dates are always tropical). Other planets' returns have their own checks and are not covered by this one.

Common questions

How often is a Mercury return?

About once a year as seen from Earth. Mercury's own lap of the Sun is 88 days, but the return is to a degree of the zodiac, and because Earth moves too, consecutive returns in Umbriel's own scan fell 356 to 409 days apart, 365 on average.

Why does my Mercury return have three dates?

Because Mercury retrogrades. When your natal degree falls inside the backward loop, Mercury crosses it going forward, turns back over it, and crosses a third time. All three are exact. Umbriel lists them all, each marked direct or retrograde, and dates the return from the first.

How often does a Mercury return have three passes?

Not often. In Umbriel's own scan of 490 complete Mercury returns, 11 in 100 had more than one pass, the longest running 47 days from first to last. Most returns are a single date, and Umbriel shows that too.

What does a Mercury return mean?

Read as a restart for how you think, talk, learn and get about, in the part of the chart natal Mercury occupies. It is a reflective reading, not a forecast.

Do I need my birth time?

For the dates, not really: Mercury moves slowly enough that the day is close either way, and Umbriel dates a return from your natal Mercury degree. For the house the return falls in and the return chart's angles, yes.

How accurate are the dates?

Compared with NASA/JPL Horizons on 12 October 2026, 9 exact Mercury passes for 2 invented births agreed to within 14 minutes. Details are on this page, along with what was not checked.

Is a Mercury return every 88 days?

No. 88 days is how long Mercury takes to go round the Sun. A Mercury return as astrologers use it is Mercury coming back to a degree of the zodiac as seen from Earth, and because Earth is moving too that happens about once a year on average. Umbriel does not compute the heliocentric 88-day lap.

Is a Mercury return the same as Mercury retrograde?

No. A Mercury retrograde is Mercury appearing to move backwards, about three times a year. A Mercury return is Mercury arriving back at your natal degree. They meet only when your degree falls inside the backward loop, and then the return is three passes.

Is the Mercury return calculator free?

Yes. Every return, every pass and the return chart, with no account and no email.

Do I need an account or an email address?

No account for the chart. There is no sign-up and no email capture. The written reading is part of Membership, and the first seven days of that are free.
