Mercury is the messenger of the chart. It governs thinking, speech and learning.

Mercury at a glance

What Mercury means

Mercury is how you take a thing in and hand it on. Reading, arguing, explaining, the order you put facts in, the speed you talk at.

It rules two signs and does a different job in each: Gemini's Mercury connects, Virgo's sorts. Yours does one of those more naturally than the other, and the sign it sits in tells you which.

It is also the only planet that is never far from your Sun, and that has a consequence worth knowing: your Mercury is in the same sign as your Sun, or in one of the two either side. Never further.

When Mercury is the hard part

Its closeness to the Sun makes it easy to mistake for the self. The opinion you defend hardest is often just the shape your Mercury prefers an argument to have.

And a quick Mercury is not a wise one. The sign describes the style, not the quality, and no chart can tell you whether what you said was true.

Its cycle, and the ages it lands on

88 days around the Sun, but from here it takes about a year to work through the zodiac, because it keeps pace with the Sun it never leaves.

It turns retrograde three or four times a year, for around three weeks each time. No other visible planet does it anything like that often, which is exactly why it is the one everybody has heard of.

Can you see it?

The hardest of the five classical planets to see, and most people never have. It never strays more than about 28 degrees from the Sun, so it only ever appears low in the dusk or low before dawn, in twilight, and not for long.

Copernicus is said to have died without ever seeing it. If you do catch it, it is a bright star sitting improbably close to a horizon the Sun has only just left.

What retrograde actually is

Nothing goes backwards. Mercury retrograde is the view from a moving Earth: as we pass it, or it passes us, it appears to slide back against the stars for a few weeks, the way a slower car seems to drift backwards as you overtake it.

It is entirely predictable and it is printed in every ephemeris for centuries ahead. What it is not is a force. Whether those weeks mean anything is a separate question from whether the motion is real, and only the first half of that is astronomy.

Mercury also touches

writing, siblings, short trips, technology, the everyday mind.
