What Pluto means
Pluto is what is not negotiable. What ends, what you cannot talk your way around, and who you are on the other side of it.
It is small, distant and reclassified, and none of that changes what it does in a chart, because a chart is not a mass measurement. It is a position, and the position went on being useful.
It spends anywhere from twelve to thirty years in a sign, depending where it is in a very eccentric orbit, which makes it the most generational body of all. Read the house, and read what it touches.
When Pluto is the hard part
Death, destruction and obsession are easy things to write about Pluto and hard things to read about yourself, so this page tries not to reach for them.
What is actually true is heavier and much quieter. Pluto's house is read as the place with the least room to pretend, and as the one where change tends to arrive as a fact rather than as a choice.
Its cycle, and the ages it lands on
About 248 years, so no return and no opposition inside a human life. What everybody gets is the Pluto square, and its timing has moved: it has landed anywhere between roughly 40 and 90 depending on when you were born, because the orbit is eccentric enough that Pluto's speed through the zodiac varies by a factor of three.
That variation is not a flaw in the technique. It is what an eccentric orbit does, and it is precisely why a fixed table of ages cannot work for this one.
Can you see it?
You will not see it. Pluto is around magnitude 14, far below anything an eye can reach, and it takes a serious telescope and a star chart to tell it from the background.
Clyde Tombaugh found it in 1930 by comparing photographs of the same patch of sky taken days apart and looking for the one dot that had moved.
What retrograde actually is
Five to six months a year. Pluto is retrograde nearly half the time.
Which means roughly half of all birth charts have it retrograde. Worth remembering whenever a retrograde placement is described as rare, or as significant in itself.
Pluto also touches
the underworld, deep change, control, taboo, what's buried and must surface.
