What Neptune means

Neptune is where the edges go. Imagination, longing, compassion, and the particular ache of wanting something that does not quite exist.

It dissolves what it touches, which is a description rather than a warning. Boundaries go, and so does the hard line between you and other people, for better and worse in the same place.

It takes about fourteen years to cross a sign, so like Uranus and Pluto it describes a generation. The house is where it becomes yours.

When Neptune is the hard part

The same faculty makes the art and makes the excuses. Neptune's house is where the tradition says the fog is thickest, and it is blunt that most of the fog is self-made. Read it as a place to look twice, not as a verdict.

And it is the placement where the difference between compassion and self-erasure is hardest to see from the inside. That difference matters more than any of its other meanings put together.

Its cycle, and the ages it lands on

About 165 years, so nobody gets a Neptune return. The opposition would fall at about 82 and the square at about 41.

For most people Neptune is felt as transits to other things rather than as a cycle of its own. It is simply too slow to be a chapter.

Can you see it?

Never visible to the naked eye, at any time, from anywhere. Neptune is around magnitude 8, so it needs binoculars at the very least and a telescope to be anything more than a dot.

It was found in 1846 by prediction rather than by looking. The wobbles in Uranus's orbit implied a body of a certain mass in a certain place, and when somebody pointed a telescope there, it was. That is the most impressive single result in the history of finding things in the solar system.

What retrograde actually is

About five months a year, roughly 40% of the time, like the other outer planets.

Because these bodies move so slowly, their stations sit on the same degree for weeks. If you have a planet or an angle at that degree, the transit is long rather than sharp, which is a genuinely different experience and worth knowing in advance.
