What Chiron means

Chiron is the wound you know your way around. Not the worst thing that ever happened to you: the one you have studied, because you had to.

It is not a planet. It is a small icy body between Saturn and Uranus, found in 1977, and the meaning attached to it is younger than most of the people reading this page. That is worth saying plainly rather than leaving to be discovered.

What makes it useful is the pairing the tradition noticed: the place you were hurt is very often the place you turn out to be unusually good at helping. Chiron's house is where those are the same place.

When Chiron is the hard part

Because the meaning is recent, it attracts more interpretation than it can carry. A chart cannot tell you what happened to you. This page describes a placement, not a history.

And there is a real hazard inside the idea of the wounded healer, which is that it can make a virtue of not healing. The wound is not the qualification.

Its cycle, and the ages it lands on

About 50 years, and very unevenly. Chiron's orbit is eccentric enough that it spends under two years crossing Libra and about eight crossing Aries, so no two people's Chiron ages line up the way Saturn's do.

The Chiron return at around 50 is the one everybody gets, and it is one of the few timing events in astrology that arrives at an age when people are already looking back.

Can you see it?

Not visible without a telescope: magnitude 15 to 18. And it is a comet as well as an asteroid, which was not obvious at first. It has been seen to grow a coma.

It crosses the orbits of both Saturn and Uranus, which is where the bridge idea comes from. Unusually for astrology, the symbolism follows an actual orbital fact rather than a myth applied afterwards.

What retrograde actually is

About five months a year.

Chiron was only found in 1977, so every claim made about it rests on fifty years of observation at the very most. That is not a reason to ignore it. It is a reason to hold it more lightly than you hold Saturn.
