What The North Node means
The North Node is not an object. There is nothing there. It is the point where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's, which makes it a piece of geometry rather than a body.
That is why it has no mass, no light, and no retrograde in the ordinary sense, and why the two nodes are always exactly opposite each other, to the degree. It is one of the few things in a chart you can check with subtraction.
Traditionally it is the direction of growth: the unfamiliar thing, the one you have to choose rather than fall into. The South Node opposite it is what you already do well enough to hide in.
When The North Node is the hard part
It is the placement most often read as destiny, and destiny is the one thing a chart is least equipped to supply. The node describes a direction, not an outcome.
And the old framing that the South Node is a fault to be given up is worth resisting. It is a competence. The only question is whether you are using it or sheltering behind it.
Its cycle, and the ages it lands on
18.6 years to go round, backwards. So the nodes return at about 18.6, 37 and 56, and half-return at about 9, 28 and 46: some of the most consistently reported turning points people name when they map their own lives without being prompted.
It also drives eclipses. An eclipse can only happen when a new or full Moon lands near a node, which is why they arrive in seasons roughly six months apart instead of every month.
Can you see it?
You cannot see it, because there is nothing there to see. But you can see what it does, because an eclipse is the nodes made visible.
Twice a year the Sun passes one of them, and for a few weeks either side of that any new or full Moon close enough to the node lines up exactly enough to cast a shadow.
What retrograde actually is
The nodes move backwards nearly all the time, which is normal for them and is not the same thing as a planet turning retrograde.
There are two versions in use: the mean node, which moves steadily backwards, and the true node, which wobbles and now and then edges forwards for a few days. They can differ by more than a degree, so this app prints which one it used rather than leaving you to guess.
The North Node also touches
what to lean toward; the South Node opposite is your comfort zone and past mastery.
