What Saturn means
Saturn is where you meet the edge of what you can get away with. Time, limit, consequence, and the slow acquisition of competence that only comes from having been told no.
It has the worst reputation in the chart and it is the one most people end up grateful for. Nothing Saturn touches is easy and very little of it stays bad.
Saturn's house is not usually where the talent was handed over. It is very often where the competence ends up.
When Saturn is the hard part
The lesson is real and so is what it cost. Saturn's house is where a chart most often describes something that genuinely hurt, and calling that a gift too early is the fastest way to lose somebody's trust.
And Saturn can become an alibi. A limit you have stopped testing is no longer a limit. It is a decision.
Its cycle, and the ages it lands on
About 29.5 years, which produces the best-known timing event in astrology: the Saturn return at roughly 29, and again near 58, with the squares and the opposition at about 7, 14 and 22 years in between.
It is also where the traditional seven-year rhythm comes from. Divide Saturn's cycle in four and you get the ages people have been marking for two thousand years, which you can notice without having to believe anything about it.
Can you see it?
Visible to the naked eye as a steady yellowish star, the slowest of the classical planets, and the outermost body anybody knew about until 1781.
The rings need only a small telescope, which is why a first look at Saturn tends to be remembered for life. They were what Galileo could not quite resolve and described as handles.
What retrograde actually is
About four and a half months a year. Like Jupiter, Saturn is retrograde often enough that it is a condition rather than an event.
The retrograde loops of the outer planets are the observation the whole heliocentric argument was eventually built on. They are very difficult to explain if the Earth is standing still.
Saturn also touches
authority, tradition, hard-won lessons, the father, the long game, karma.
