What Uranus means
Uranus is where you will not be managed. The rule you cannot follow, the thing about you that was never going to fit, and the moments a life turns without warning.
It was the first planet discovered rather than inherited. William Herschel found it in 1781, which is why it has no ancient tradition, and why what it means was worked out over the last two centuries instead of the last two thousand.
It spends about seven years in a sign, so it describes a cohort as much as a person. What is individual about yours is the house.
When Uranus is the hard part
Freedom is easy to confuse with refusal. Uranus's house is where you may keep leaving before anybody can decide anything about you, and call it independence.
And a break can cost more than the thing it broke. No chart can tell you whether the rule you are about to walk away from was a bad one.
Its cycle, and the ages it lands on
84 years, so almost nobody gets a Uranus return and everybody gets the opposition: Uranus opposite where it stood at your birth, at about 42. That is the astrology underneath what usually gets called a midlife crisis, and it is a real interval rather than a joke.

Can you see it?
Right at the edge of what an eye can do. Uranus is around magnitude 5.7, technically visible from a properly dark site if you know exactly where to look, and it had been recorded as a star several times before anybody noticed it was moving.
Herschel took it for a comet at first. The discovery was not that a new object existed. It was that a known one turned up in two different places.
What retrograde actually is
About five months of every year. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are each retrograde something like 40% of the time.
At that rate a retrograde outer planet in a birth chart is not a special case. Roughly two people in five have this one.
