What a Uranus return is
A Uranus return is Uranus arriving back at the degree of the zodiac it occupied when you were born. Uranus takes about 84 years to go round the Sun, so a Uranus return belongs to a long life, and many people never see theirs. Read, in modern astrology, as the close of a life-long cycle of change and independence, in the part of the chart natal Uranus occupies. It is a reflective reading, not a forecast.
Uranus is retrograde for about five months of every year and moves very slowly, so almost every Uranus return is three passes spread across most of a year.
The detail a single date leaves out is that the return is not always one moment. Uranus retrogrades, so it can cross your degree, back over it, and cross a third time: three exact passes, and every one of them is exact. Umbriel lists every crossing in the window it searches, labels each direct or retrograde, and says which one the return is dated from. Many return calculators give one date; this page does not say what any particular one does, because we have not audited them. It says what Umbriel does and why one date can be too little.

How often it comes, as Umbriel computes it
- Uranus's own lap of the Sun is about 84 years, but that is the lap Umbriel does not use here.
- What Umbriel computes: the return to your tropical zodiac degree as seen from Earth, found by scanning the sky for every crossing of that degree.
- Measured on Umbriel's own engine across 4 natal degrees, searched 1700 to 2130: 18 complete Uranus returns, consecutive returns of one degree 83.2 to 84.0 years apart, 83.7 years on average.
- 94 in every 100 of those returns had more than one exact pass; the longest ran 296 days from first pass to last.
A worked example: every pass
Take someone born on 3 May 1946 at 09:30 UT. This is an invented birth, not anyone's chart. Their natal Uranus is at 15.49° Gemini. Searching from 1 January 2005 to 1 January 2055, Umbriel finds one complete Uranus return with 3 exact passes:
| Pass | Date and time | Motion |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 24 June 2029, 12:10 UT | direct |
| 2 | 2 January 2030, 22:26 UT | retrograde |
| 3 | 9 April 2030, 20:33 UT | direct |
The return is dated from the first pass, 24 June 2029, 12:10 UT, but Uranus crosses the same degree again going backwards on 2 January 2030, 22:26 UT and a third time going forwards on 9 April 2030, 20:33 UT. From first pass to last is 289 days. A calculator that printed only the first date would leave out the other two exact hits.
How Umbriel computes it
This tool finds the moments Uranus comes back to the tropical longitude it held at your birth. Your natal Uranus is computed first, as a tropical longitude, even if your chart is set to sidereal, so the dates are never shifted by the ayanamsa. Umbriel then scans forward from today for 100.8 years (1.2 times Uranus's geocentric period of 84.02 years in the code), sampling Uranus's position in steps of at most 6 days. Wherever the position crosses your natal degree it halves the interval 40 times to pin the moment. Crossings are grouped into one return when they fall within a quarter of a period of each other (about 7,700 days), because Uranus can retrograde back over the degree and cross it three times. The table lists each return dated from its first pass, every pass with its date and time, and marks a return as partial if a pass falls outside the window searched. Uranus's position comes from the VSOP87D series with light time and aberration, which the accuracy page reports within 2.5 arcseconds of NASA/JPL Horizons for Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune over 1910 to 2044. Return dates were compared with NASA/JPL Horizons for one invented birth, a thinner check than the inner planets, and the page says so. Uranus moves so slowly, and is retrograde for about five months of each year, that most Uranus returns have three passes. The dates depend on your birth moment only through your natal Uranus, but the house it is in needs a birth time. The table shows the next return and the ones after it that fall in the window, not every return since birth.
How it was checked
On 12 October 2026 Umbriel's Uranus return dates were compared with NASA/JPL Horizons (DE441, apparent geocentric ecliptic longitude of date): the body's position at the birth moment gave the target degree, a daily then hourly table from Horizons located every crossing, and each was set beside the engine's. For 1 invented birth that was 3 exact passes, and the largest difference was 29 minutes. That is a thinner check than the inner planets got, and it is one birth. What was not checked: returns before 2005 or after 2055, charts cast for the return moment (houses and angles), any birth place, and the sidereal zodiac (return dates are always tropical). Other planets' returns have their own checks and are not covered by this one.
What's in your result
- The next returnsNot only the next one: the ones after it that fall in the window Umbriel searches.
- Every pass, markedEach exact crossing with its date and time, direct or retrograde, so a return split by a retrograde shows all of its passes.
- Which pass it is dated fromNamed, so the date can be checked against any other source.
- Where your natal Uranus sitsSign and degree: the placement the whole return is about.
- The return chartCast for the first exact pass, for your birthplace, opened under its row.
Common questions
How often is a Uranus return?
Uranus takes about eighty-four years, and consecutive returns in Umbriel's own scan were 83.2 to 84.0 years apart.
Why does my Uranus return have three dates?
Because Uranus retrogrades. When your natal degree falls inside the backward loop, Uranus crosses it going forward, turns back over it, and crosses a third time. All three are exact. Umbriel lists them all, each marked direct or retrograde, and dates the return from the first.
How often does a Uranus return have three passes?
Most of the time. In Umbriel's own scan, 94 in 100 of the complete Uranus returns had three passes, the longest running 296 days from first to last.
What does a Uranus return mean?
Read, in modern astrology, as the close of a life-long cycle of change and independence, in the part of the chart natal Uranus occupies. It is a reflective reading, not a forecast.
Do I need my birth time?
For the dates, not really: Uranus moves slowly enough that the day is close either way, and Umbriel dates a return from your natal Uranus degree. For the house the return falls in and the return chart's angles, yes.
How accurate are the dates?
Compared with NASA/JPL Horizons on 12 October 2026, 3 exact Uranus passes for 1 invented birth agreed to within 29 minutes. Details are on this page, along with what was not checked.
At what age is the Uranus return?
Close to eighty-four. The gap is nearly the same for every degree, because Uranus's orbit is close to circular. In Umbriel's own scan the gaps between returns ran from about 83.2 to 83.9 years, so most people's fall in their eighty-fourth year.
Is the Uranus return calculator as checked as the Venus or Mars ones?
Uranus's position uses the same VSOP87D series the accuracy page reports within seconds of an arc of NASA/JPL Horizons, and its return dates agreed with Horizons for one invented birth (three passes) to within hours. That is one birth, a thinner check than the inner planets got, and the page says so.
Is the Uranus return calculator free?
Yes. Every return, every pass and the return chart, with no account and no email.
Do I need an account or an email address?
No account for the chart. There is no sign-up and no email capture. The written reading is part of Membership, and the first seven days of that are free.
