What Sade Sati is

Sade Sati (Shani Sade Sati, Saturn's seven and a half) is the stretch of years when Saturn passes through the three signs around your natal Moon: the 12th sign from it, the Moon's own sign, then the 2nd. Saturn spends about two and a half years in a sign, so the three together take about seven and a half years, which is the name.

Saturn goes round the zodiac in about 29.5 years, so Sade Sati comes back roughly every thirty years, and most people live through two or three. Its three phases are traditionally read differently: the rising phase as pressure from outside, the peak, with Saturn over the Moon itself, as the most personal, and the setting phase as the long finish. The tradition reads it as a demanding but maturing chapter, the years that ask you to grow up a little. Umbriel gives you the dates and the old meaning, and does not treat it as a curse.

Because it is counted from the Moon, two people born the same year can have very different Sade Sati dates, and two people with the same Moon sign share theirs exactly, whatever their birthdays.

How Umbriel computes it

Deeper.a cup-of-tea read

Umbriel finds your Moon's sign in the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsa unless you choose another on the Vedic page), then follows Saturn's sidereal sign across the years from twelve years ago to twenty-two years ahead. It samples Saturn's position every 40 days and halves each sign change down to the day, so the start and end of each phase are dated to the month.

Saturn turns retrograde once a year and often backs out of a sign it has just entered. A calculator that ends Sade Sati at the first dip gives a period that is months long and wrong; Umbriel treats stretches less than a year apart as one period, so the whole seven and a half years is shown with its true start and end. Phase dates near a sign edge can still move by a few weeks with the ayanamsa, and the page says so.

Common questions

Am I in Sade Sati now?

You are if Saturn is now in the sign before your Moon sign, in your Moon sign, or in the sign after it, counted in the sidereal zodiac. Umbriel works out your sidereal Moon sign from your birth details, compares it with Saturn today, and says yes or no with the phase and its dates.

How long does Sade Sati last?

About seven and a half years: roughly two and a half in each of the three signs. Saturn's retrograde loops at each sign edge can stretch or shift a phase by some months, which is why Umbriel follows Saturn's actual motion instead of adding two and a half years at a time.

When does my next Sade Sati start?

If you are not in one now, Umbriel gives the month the next one begins, when Saturn first enters the sign before your Moon sign. It comes round roughly every thirty years.

Is Sade Sati bad?

It is traditionally read as a demanding period that brings responsibility, delay and maturity, not as a curse. Many people find the years were heavy and also the ones they built the most in. Umbriel gives the dates and the traditional meaning and leaves the judgment to you.

Why is my Sade Sati different on another site?

Usually for one of three reasons: the other site uses the tropical zodiac (Sade Sati is a sidereal technique), it uses a different ayanamsa, which can move your Moon across a sign edge, or it ends the period at Saturn's first retrograde dip. Umbriel names its ayanamsa and follows the retrograde, so a difference can be traced to its cause.

Do I need my birth time for Sade Sati?

Usually not. Sade Sati is counted from your Moon sign, and the Moon stays in a sign for about two and a half days, so the date is normally enough. If the Moon changed sign on your birthday, the time decides which sign it was, and with it which years are your Sade Sati; give the time if you have it.
