What a Neptune sign is
Neptune was found on 23 September 1846 at Berlin, after its pull on Uranus had been worked out on paper. Your Neptune sign is where it stood at your birth. Astrologers read it for imagination, longing, idealism and the things that will not stay sharp: where you dream, and where you are inclined to see what you hope to see.
Deeper.a one-breath read
Neptune takes about 165 years to go round the Sun and spends roughly fourteen years in each sign, so a whole generation shares one. It was in Capricorn from 1984, settled into Aquarius in 1998, Pisces in 2012 and Aries in 2026. It turns retrograde each year, and near a border it can step over the line and back for a few months before it settles, so a birth in 1998, 2011, 2012, 2025 or 2026 needs the exact day.
The house and the degree are what make a Neptune personal, and the house needs a birth time and place.

How Umbriel computes it
Deeper.a one-breath read
Umbriel computes Neptune from the VSOP87 series for its orbit, for the moment of your birth, and converts it to a longitude seen from Earth. Umbriel's own check against NASA's JPL ephemeris, 1910 to 2044, finds it within a few arcseconds, and it puts Neptune's final entry into Pisces on 3 February 2012, within a quarter of an hour of the time printed in a published ingress table. Near a sign edge Umbriel says so and names both signs. The house needs your birth time and place; without a time, Umbriel gives the sign and leaves the house out.

Don’t know your birth time?
Deeper.a cup-of-tea read
Know it roughly? Give the time and say where it came from (a certificate, a parent’s memory, or something rough like “early morning”), and your chart tells you what could change within that window.
Don’t know it at all? Umbriel does not fill the gap with a guess. Tick “I don’t know the time at all” and it checks your whole birthday, hour by hour, then tells you two things: which placements are the same whatever time you were born, as exact as they would be if you knew the minute, and which are down to two signs, both named, so you know what a parent’s memory would settle.
The Ascendant, the Midheaven and the houses are left out rather than approximated. A birth time is the one thing they cannot be computed without, and an approximate Rising sign that looks exact is worse than no Rising sign at all.
Common questions
What does my Neptune sign mean?
Modern astrology reads Neptune for imagination, idealism, longing and what is hard to pin down. A Neptune in Capricorn is often read as a dream of structure and order, a Neptune in Aquarius as a dream of a better collective. Best held as a question to think with, not a verdict.
How long does Neptune stay in a sign?
About fourteen years, because it takes about 165 years to go round the Sun. Near a border its retrograde loop can take it back over the line for a few months, so a birth in that window needs the exact date.
Which signs has Neptune been in?
Capricorn from 1984, then it settled into Aquarius in 1998, Pisces in 2012 and Aries in 2026. In 1998, 2011 and 2025 it stepped over a border and back for a few months while retrograde.
Can I find my Neptune sign without a birth time?
Yes. Neptune moves a very small fraction of a degree a day, so the date settles the sign unless it sat right on an edge. What you cannot get without a time is the house, and Umbriel leaves it out rather than guessing.
How accurate is Neptune here?
Within a few arcseconds in Umbriel's own check against NASA's JPL ephemeris (1910 to 2044). Near a sign edge, Umbriel names both signs.
Is this Neptune sign calculator free?
Yes: sign, degree, house and retrograde status, with no account and no email, calculated in your own browser.
What if I don’t know my birth time?
Umbriel checks your whole birthday hour by hour and separates what is certain from what is not. Placements that are the same whatever time you were born are shown as exact. Placements that changed sign during the day are shown as two named signs, so you know what a parent's memory would settle. The Ascendant, Midheaven and houses are left out rather than approximated. They cannot be computed without a time, and an approximate Rising sign that looks exact is worse than none.
Do I need an account or an email address?
No. There is no sign-up, no email capture and no free trial. Enter your details and the result is drawn in your own browser.
