What a Uranus sign is
Uranus was found by William Herschel at Bath on 13 March 1781, the first planet that nobody had known since antiquity. Your Uranus sign is where it stood at your birth. Astrologers read it for change, freedom and the sudden turn: where you do not want to be told, and where you are likely to break from the script.
Deeper.a one-breath read
Uranus takes about 84 years to go round the Sun, so it spends roughly seven years in each sign, and everyone born in the same seven years shares a Uranus sign. That is why it is read as a generational placement. It settled into Aquarius in 1996, Pisces in 2004, Aries in 2011, Taurus in 2019 and Gemini in 2026. Like every outer planet it turns retrograde each year, and near a border it can step over the line and back for a few months before it settles, so a birth in the year before each of those needs the exact day.
The house and the degree are what make a Uranus personal, and the house needs a birth time and place.

How Umbriel computes it
Deeper.a one-breath read
Umbriel computes Uranus from the VSOP87 series for its orbit, for the moment of your birth, and converts it to a longitude seen from Earth. Umbriel's own check against NASA's JPL ephemeris, 1910 to 2044, finds it within a few arcseconds, and it puts Uranus's entry into Taurus on 15 May 2018, within a quarter of an hour of the time printed in a published ingress table. Near a sign edge Umbriel says so and names both signs. The house needs your birth time and place; without a time, Umbriel gives the sign and leaves the house out.

Don’t know your birth time?
Deeper.a cup-of-tea read
Know it roughly? Give the time and say where it came from (a certificate, a parent’s memory, or something rough like “early morning”), and your chart tells you what could change within that window.
Don’t know it at all? Umbriel does not fill the gap with a guess. Tick “I don’t know the time at all” and it checks your whole birthday, hour by hour, then tells you two things: which placements are the same whatever time you were born, as exact as they would be if you knew the minute, and which are down to two signs, both named, so you know what a parent’s memory would settle.
The Ascendant, the Midheaven and the houses are left out rather than approximated. A birth time is the one thing they cannot be computed without, and an approximate Rising sign that looks exact is worse than no Rising sign at all.
Common questions
What does my Uranus sign mean?
Modern astrology reads Uranus for change, independence and the unexpected. A Uranus in Aries is often read as a break-away that starts things, a Uranus in Taurus as change that arrives through money, the body and what feels solid. Best held as a question to think with, not a verdict.
How long does Uranus stay in a sign?
About seven years, because it takes about 84 years to go round the Sun. A retrograde loop near a border can take it back over the line for a few months, so a birth in that window needs the exact date.
Which signs has Uranus been in?
It settled into Aquarius in 1996, Pisces in 2004, Aries in 2011, Taurus in 2019 and Gemini in 2026. In the year before some of those it stepped over the border and back for a few months while retrograde.
Can I find my Uranus sign without a birth time?
Yes. Uranus moves a small fraction of a degree a day, so the date settles the sign unless it sat right on an edge. What you cannot get without a time is the house, and Umbriel leaves it out rather than guessing.
How accurate is Uranus here?
Within a few arcseconds in Umbriel's own check against NASA's JPL ephemeris (1910 to 2044). Near a sign edge, Umbriel names both signs.
Is this Uranus sign calculator free?
Yes: sign, degree, house and retrograde status, with no account and no email, calculated in your own browser.
What if I don’t know my birth time?
Umbriel checks your whole birthday hour by hour and separates what is certain from what is not. Placements that are the same whatever time you were born are shown as exact. Placements that changed sign during the day are shown as two named signs, so you know what a parent's memory would settle. The Ascendant, Midheaven and houses are left out rather than approximated. They cannot be computed without a time, and an approximate Rising sign that looks exact is worse than none.
Do I need an account or an email address?
No. There is no sign-up, no email capture and no free trial. Enter your details and the result is drawn in your own browser.
