What a Pluto sign is
Your Pluto sign is where Pluto stood at your birth. Modern astrology associates Pluto with power, depth and transformation: what is buried, what is compulsive, what gets destroyed and remade. It is a modern planet, found in 1930, so it has no place in the traditional rulerships and no two-thousand-year-old reading to lean on. What it has is ninety years of astrologers watching where it falls in charts, and a fairly settled sense that it marks the place where a life goes deepest.

Pluto is the slowest body in the chart. It takes about 248 years to circle the Sun, and because its orbit is so stretched it does not spend the same time in each sign: it hurried through Scorpio in about twelve years and will take about thirty-one to cross Taurus. Everyone born within a decade or two of you shares your Pluto sign, which is why it is called a generational placement. Pluto was in Scorpio from late 1983 to 1995, in Sagittarius until 2008, in Capricorn until 2024, and settled into Aquarius in November 2024, where it stays until the 2040s.
Because it is so far away, Pluto appears to move backwards for about five to six months of every year, so close to half of all people are born with it retrograde. That makes a natal Pluto retrograde about as ordinary as a natal Pluto direct, and not worth reading as a special condition. What is worth reading is the house, which depends on your birth time and place, and the aspects Pluto makes to your Sun, Moon and personal planets: those are what turn a generation's Pluto into one person's. In 2006 astronomers reclassified Pluto as a dwarf planet; astrology kept using it, because the question was never its size.

How Umbriel computes it
Deeper.a cup-of-tea read
Your Pluto sign is the zodiac sign that Pluto was in, seen from Earth, at your birth moment. Umbriel computes Pluto's position from orbital elements fitted to its observed path, converts it to a geocentric ecliptic longitude using the Sun's position, and reads the sign as the longitude divided by 30, with the degree as the remainder. Whether Pluto was retrograde is taken from its motion across a half-day step around your birth moment, and its daily speed is kept. Your birth time is turned into UT through the IANA time-zone database, so date, time and place fix the moment. The house is the only part that needs an exact birth time and place: it comes from the cusps of your chosen house system, and without a birth time Umbriel gives no house at all. The sign does not depend on the birthplace, and it depends on the time only if Pluto changed sign on your birthday, which for a body that moves a few hundredths of a degree a day happens on a handful of days in a generation. Where that is the case Umbriel says so, and names both signs rather than picking one.
What's in your result

- Sign and exact degreeTo the degree and minute, which is what Pluto's slow transits to your chart are timed from.
- The house it falls inWhere the depth and the pressure tend to show up. This is the part that needs your birth time, and the part that makes a generation's placement personal.
- Retrograde or directWhether Pluto was moving forward at your birth, and how fast, with the honest note that about half of everyone has it retrograde.
- Every aspect it makesEach contact with its exact orb, and whether it was applying or separating. The aspects to your Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars are the ones that make Pluto personal.
- Its generationThe years Pluto held your sign, so you can see who shares it with you and how long the sign lasted.
- The sign's rulerWhere Pluto's dispositor sits. The placement the whole Pluto story answers to.
Don’t know your birth time?
Deeper.a cup-of-tea read
Know it roughly? Give the time and say where it came from (a certificate, a parent’s memory, or something rough like “early morning”), and your chart tells you what could change within that window.
Don’t know it at all? Umbriel does not fill the gap with a guess. Tick “I don’t know the time at all” and it checks your whole birthday, hour by hour, then tells you two things: which placements are the same whatever time you were born, as exact as they would be if you knew the minute, and which are down to two signs, both named, so you know what a parent’s memory would settle.
The Ascendant, the Midheaven and the houses are left out rather than approximated. A birth time is the one thing they cannot be computed without, and an approximate Rising sign that looks exact is worse than no Rising sign at all.
Common questions
Can I find my Pluto sign without a birth time?
Yes, almost without exception. Pluto spends between twelve and thirty-one years in a sign, so the date is enough except for the handful of days in a generation when it crossed a boundary, and Umbriel names both signs on those. What you cannot get without a time is the house, and Umbriel leaves that blank rather than guessing.
What does the Pluto sign mean?
Modern astrology reads it for power, depth and transformation: what is buried and what gets remade. Because a whole generation shares it, the sign is read for the character of an era, and the house and the aspects are what make it personal. Best held as a prompt to think with, not a rule about you.
What does it mean if my Pluto is retrograde?
It means Pluto appeared to move backwards at your birth, which it does for five to six months of every year, so close to half of all people have it. That makes it about as ordinary as Pluto direct, and most astrologers do not read a natal Pluto retrograde as anything special.
Pluto is not a planet any more. Why is it in my chart?
Astronomers reclassified Pluto as a dwarf planet in 2006. Astrology kept using it, because what matters to a chart is where a body is and how it moves, not what category it is filed under. Umbriel computes it the same way it did before 2006, from its observed orbit.
Is this Pluto sign calculator free?
Yes: sign, degree, house, retrograde status and aspects, with no account and no email, calculated in your own browser.
What if I don’t know my birth time?
Umbriel checks your whole birthday hour by hour and separates what is certain from what is not. Placements that are the same whatever time you were born are shown as exact. Placements that changed sign during the day are shown as two named signs, so you know what a parent's memory would settle. The Ascendant, Midheaven and houses are left out rather than approximated. They cannot be computed without a time, and an approximate Rising sign that looks exact is worse than none.
Do I need an account or an email address?
No. There is no sign-up, no email capture and no free trial. Enter your details and the result is drawn in your own browser.
