◉ Free Dominant Planet Calculator

Umbriel's free dominant planet calculator ranks the planets in your birth chart by weight and shows the scores it used. No account, no email. It gives the ranking under both modern and traditional rulerships, because the two genuinely disagree about which planet runs a chart — and most calculators only show you one.

What a dominant planet actually is

A dominant planet is whichever body carries the most weight in a chart once you have counted everything that gives a planet emphasis: what it rules, where it sits, what it aspects, whether it is on an angle, whether it is in a sign it is comfortable in. The idea is sound. The scoring is not standardised in any way.

⚠️ That is the part worth understanding before you take any answer to heart. Every calculator invents its own weights — how much an angular placement is worth against a rulership, whether the Ascendant ruler gets a bonus, whether aspects count by number or by tightness. Two honest calculators can hand you two different dominants from the same chart, and neither is lying.

There is a second, sharper fork. Under modern rulerships Pluto rules Scorpio, Uranus rules Aquarius and Neptune rules Pisces; under traditional ones those signs belong to Mars, Saturn and Jupiter. Since rulership is one of the heaviest ingredients in any dominance score, switching schemes can change the answer outright — and on some charts the two schemes disagree by a fraction of a point, which is exactly where a single confident number would mislead you most. Umbriel runs both and shows the figures rather than the verdict.

Common questions

Why do dominant planet calculators disagree?

Because there is no standard scoring. Each one chooses its own weights for rulership, angularity, aspects and dignity, and small differences in those weights change the ranking. Umbriel shows the scores rather than only the winner so you can see how close the call was.

What is the difference between modern and traditional dominance?

Which planets rule which signs. Modern astrology gives Scorpio to Pluto, Aquarius to Uranus and Pisces to Neptune; traditional astrology gives them to Mars, Saturn and Jupiter. Rulership is heavily weighted in any dominance calculation, so the two schemes can return different dominants for the same chart. Umbriel runs both.

Is my dominant planet the same as my chart ruler?

No, and they are often different. The chart ruler is simply the planet that rules your rising sign — one rule, one answer. The dominant planet is the outcome of a weighted count across the whole chart.

Does my Sun sign make its ruler dominant?

It contributes, but it rarely decides it. A planet sitting on an angle, or ruling several occupied signs, can easily outweigh the ruler of the Sun sign.

Is the dominant planet calculator free?

Yes — the full ranking with scores, in both rulership schemes, with no account and no email.
