What the elements are
Every sign belongs to one of four elements (fire, earth, air and water) and one of three modes: cardinal, fixed or mutable. Adding up which elements your planets sit in gives a rough temperature reading of a chart: where it is warm and quick, where it is slow and material, where it lives in the head, where it lives in the feelings.
The trouble is the arithmetic. Counted flat, the Moon and Pluto each score one, even though the Moon is one of the two lights and Pluto spends a dozen years in a sign, so its element is shared with everyone born in that decade. Include the outer planets unweighted and you are largely measuring your birth cohort. Include the Ascendant and Midheaven, as many astrologers do, and the answer shifts again, which is one reason two sites can call the same chart fire-dominant and water-dominant.
A missing element is usually the part people react to hardest, and it deserves a calmer reading than it gets. It does not mean an absence of that quality; more often it describes something you have had to build deliberately rather than something that arrived free. Held that way it is a useful observation. Held as a diagnosis it is just discouraging, and it was never precise enough to be one.
How Umbriel computes it
This tool weighs the ten bodies from the Sun to Pluto into the four elements and the three modes, instead of counting each body once. Each body is put in its sign, and its weight is added to that sign's element and mode: the Sun and Moon count 6, Mercury, Venus and Mars 4, Jupiter and Saturn 3, and Uranus, Neptune and Pluto 2. When the chart has a birth time, the Ascendant's sign adds 4 and the Midheaven's sign adds 3 to its element and mode. The Moon's nodes, Chiron, Lilith and asteroids are not counted. The percentages shown are each element's weight divided by the total weight, rounded for display only, and the top element is the one with the highest weight; on an exact tie the earlier of fire, earth, air and water is listed first. The signs come from the same engine as the rest of the site, so the planet positions carry the accuracy on the accuracy page (the Sun under 1 arcsecond against NASA/JPL Horizons, the Moon within 0.27 arcminutes, Jupiter to Neptune within 2.5 arcseconds over 1910 to 2044, Mercury, Venus and Mars under 0.2 degrees against published ingress dates). Those errors only matter when a body sits within that distance of a sign boundary. Birth time matters in two ways: without it the Ascendant and Midheaven are left out, and the Moon moves through a sign in a couple of days (its mean motion in the code is 13.18 degrees a day), so an unknown time can change its element. The weights are Umbriel's own choice and there is no standard set, so a different set of weights can name a different dominant element from the same chart. Sidereal charts use the sidereal signs, which can move a body into a different element.

Common questions
What does it mean to have a missing element?
That no planet in your chart sits in the signs of that element. It is common and it is not a deficiency. It more often describes a quality you have had to develop on purpose, not one that came free. Read it as an observation, not a diagnosis.
Why do two sites give me different dominant elements?
Because they weight differently. Some count every body as one, some weight the Sun and Moon more heavily, some include the Ascendant and Midheaven, some include the outer planets and some do not. Since the outer planets sit in a sign for years, including them unweighted means you are partly measuring the year you were born.
Should the outer planets count towards my elements?
Opinion is split, and the reason matters: Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move so slowly that their element is shared with an entire cohort, so counting them flat tells you less about you and more about your generation. Umbriel weights rather than counting flat, and shows what went in.
What is the difference between elements and modes?
Elements (fire, earth, air, water) are usually read for temperament. Modes (cardinal, fixed, mutable) are read for how you handle change: starting it, holding steady through it, or adapting around it. Many people find the mode balance the more recognisable of the two.
