Balance: elements, modes and the draconic flip

Read a chart's elements, modes, signature and singletons, and know what a draconic chart adds.

The weather report

Before you read single planets, take the chart's overall weather. Four elements: fire (spark, will), earth (body, making), air (thought, connection), water (feeling, memory). Three modes: cardinal (starts things), fixed (keeps things), mutable (adapts things).

Umbriel's natal balance, weighted by Umbriel's scoring (the Sun, Moon and angles count extra):

That is a lopsided chart, and lopsided is useful. The modes are close to even, so they say little. The elements shout.

Fire♈︎Aries♌︎Leo♐︎Sagittarius
Earth♑︎Capricorn♉︎Taurus♍︎Virgo
Air♎︎Libra♒︎Aquarius♊︎Gemini
Water♋︎Cancer♏︎Scorpio♓︎Pisces
The four elements. A chart heavy in one reads differently from a balanced one.

Signature and dominant planets

Put the strongest element and the strongest mode together and you get the signature sign, the chart's flavour when you squint. Umbriel's is Sagittarius (fire, mutable): restless, wide, a wanderer. Its Moon happens to be in Sagittarius too.

Umbriel also scores dominant planets, the ones with the most weight. The top five are the Sun (19.5 points), Jupiter (17.2), Mars (13.2), the Moon (13.1) and Pluto (12.7). The Sun on top matches what the last lesson found. Repetition across techniques is how you know you have found emphasis rather than noise.

Singletons: one planet carrying a whole element

Now count planets by sign, and look for an element held by only one. That planet is a singleton. It carries a whole element alone, so it tends to get overworked or overlooked, and either shows.

Umbriel has two. Venus is the only planet in earth (Virgo). Mercury is the only planet in water (Cancer). So all of Umbriel's feeling goes through its voice, Mercury, and nowhere else. All of its practical, exacting care goes through Venus.

In a fire chart, those two small rooms matter enormously. They are where the bonfire learns manners. Umbriel might get its tenderness across only in how it phrases things, and its care only in getting the detail exactly right.

The draconic flip, and counting sources

A draconic chart rotates the whole zodiac so the Moon's North Node sits at 0° Aries. The planets keep their spacing; only the signs change. Astrologers read it as the chart under the chart.

Umbriel's North Node is at 0°10′ Pisces, so everything shifts back by almost a sign. The Sun moves from 1°38′ Leo to 1°28′ Virgo, the Moon from 5°35′ Sagittarius to 5°25′ Capricorn. The draconic Big Three are Virgo, Capricorn and Virgo. And the balance flips almost exactly: Earth 63%, Fire 9%, and 81% yin. Signature: Capricorn.

Here is the honest part. The draconic is the same sky, rotated. It is one source, not two. So the flip is a striking picture, but on its own it proves nothing. It earns weight only if a separate system says the same. (One does: BaZi, the Chinese four pillars, makes Umbriel a yin-earth self. That is a second source, and lesson 11 counts it properly.)

Do it on your chart

  1. Open Natal Chart and scroll to dominants/elements.
  2. Write down your element and mode percentages and your signature sign.
  3. Write down your top three dominant planets.
  4. Count your ten planets by element. Circle any element with only one planet in it (a singleton), or none at all.
  5. Open Draconic. Write down the draconic Big Three and the element balance.
  6. Compare the two balances. If they flip, write "same sky, one source" next to it before you get excited.

What that looks like

Umbriel is 63% fire and 81% yang, signature Sagittarius, with the Sun on top of the dominant planets. Its two singletons are Venus alone in earth and Mercury alone in water, so its care and its feeling each run through a single narrow channel. The draconic flips it to 63% earth and 81% yin, a striking picture, but it is the same sky rotated, so it counts once.

What to take away

The common mistake

Treating the natal and the draconic as two witnesses that agree. They are one sky turned on its axis. Count independent sources, not number of charts.

Try it on your own chart

Write your balance as one line of weather: "Mostly ___, short on ___, with ___ carrying ___ alone." A missing element is not a flaw; it is often something a person reaches for in other people, or overdoes on purpose. Then glance at your draconic and note whether it agrees with you or turns you inside out.

What is Umbriel's natal element balance?

Fire dominates at 63%, with 81% yang. The draconic is the one with 63% earth.

Umbriel's singletons are…

Venus in Virgo is the only earth planet and Mercury in Cancer is the only water planet.

Why does the draconic flip not count as a second witness?

Rotating the zodiac to the North Node keeps every planet's spacing. Natal and draconic are one measurement seen two ways.

What is Umbriel's signature sign?

Strongest element fire plus strongest mode mutable gives Sagittarius. Capricorn is the draconic signature.
