Houses: where it all happens
Place each planet in its house, read empty houses through their rulers, and know when the house system matters.
Signs say how, houses say where
The twelve houses are the rooms of a life: 1 self and body, 2 money and values, 3 talk and nearby people, 4 home and roots, 5 play, creation and romance, 6 work and daily care, 7 partners, 8 depth and shared resources, 9 belief and far places, 10 career and reputation, 11 friends and hopes, 12 the hidden, the quiet, what happens behind the curtain.
A planet's sign tells you how it acts. Its house tells you where in the life you will see it.
Umbriel's rooms
Walk the chart house by house and say who lives there.
- 1st: Jupiter, 5°18′ Leo. Bigness on the front step.
- 3rd: Venus, 16°10′ Virgo. Care that shows up in exact words.
- 5th: the Moon, plus the Part of Fortune and all three Liliths. Feeling lives where the play is.
- 7th: Pluto, 4°20′ Aquarius. The deep stuff happens across the table, with someone.
- 9th: Saturn and Neptune, both in Aries. Structure and dreams in the house of belief.
- 10th: Chiron, 0°49′ Taurus.
- 11th: Mars and Uranus in Gemini. Drive and surprise among friends and crowds.
- 12th: the Sun and Mercury. The heart and the voice, both behind the curtain.
The 12th, 11th and 9th each hold two planets. Umbriel's own Life Areas page agrees, flagging those three houses twice each. When a count you made by hand matches a count the software made a different way, you are on firm ground.
Empty houses are not empty lives
Houses 2, 4 and 6 hold no planets at all, and the 8th has only the North Node. Beginners read that as "nothing happens there". It is not true. An empty house is read through its ruler.
Umbriel's 2nd house (money, values) has Leo on the cusp, so the Sun runs it, from the 12th. Its 4th (home, roots) has Libra on the cusp, so Venus runs it, from the 3rd: home is made of words. Its 6th (work) has Capricorn, so Saturn runs it, from the 9th.
The chart also has a wide gap: 79.4° of empty sky from Venus in Virgo round to the Moon in Sagittarius, across the bottom of the chart. Seven planets sit above the horizon, three below. A chart that lives mostly upstairs might be more at home in public, in the daylight half, than in private roots.
When the house system matters
Houses can be drawn several ways. Umbriel uses Placidus, which divides the sky by time, and offers others including Whole Sign, which makes each sign one whole house starting from the rising sign.
Most of Umbriel's planets stay put whichever you choose. Two move. In Whole Sign the Sun moves from the 12th to the 1st, because it shares the rising sign, Leo. And Venus moves from the 3rd to the 2nd.
So the honest reading of Umbriel's Sun is: hidden-room energy that sits right at the door, 2°02′ above the Ascendant. Both are true, and the planet near a cusp is the one to read with care. When a planet changes house between systems, read it as standing in the doorway between both rooms.
Do it on your chart
- Open Natal Chart and go to the planet list with houses.
- Write the twelve house numbers down the page and put each planet next to its house.
- Circle your busiest house or two.
- For each empty house you care about, look up its ruler in the house rulers and write where that ruler sits.
- Check the house comparison. Note any planet that changes house between Placidus and Whole Sign.
- Count planets above and below the horizon, and write the split.
What that looks like
Umbriel's busiest rooms are the 12th (Sun, Mercury), the 11th (Mars, Uranus) and the 9th (Saturn, Neptune), which its Life Areas page also flags. Houses 2, 4 and 6 are empty, so we read them through their rulers: the Sun from the 12th, Venus from the 3rd, Saturn from the 9th. In Whole Sign houses the Sun steps from the 12th into the 1st, so we read it as standing in the doorway, 2°02′ above the rising degree.
What to take away
- Signs say how a planet acts; houses say where in the life.
- Find the busiest houses first, then check them against a second count.
- An empty house is read through its ruler, never as 'nothing happens'.
- Seven above and three below: Umbriel lives mostly in the daylight half.
- If a planet changes house between systems, read it as standing in the doorway.
The common mistake
Announcing that an empty 7th or 10th means no partner or no career. Empty houses have rulers, and the ruler tells you where that part of the life is being handled.
Try it on your own chart
Make your twelve-line house list. Then pick your emptiest house that still matters to you (often the 7th or the 10th) and follow its ruler. Write one sentence: "My ___ house is empty, so its business is run from my ___ house by ___." That one sentence usually lands harder than anything about the full houses.

Which of Umbriel's houses hold the Sun and Mercury?
- The 1st
- The 5th
- The 12th ✓
- The 10th
Both sit in the 12th house in Placidus, the hidden room behind the curtain.
How do you read a house with no planets in it?
- Skip it, nothing happens there
- Through its ruler: the planet ruling the sign on its cusp ✓
- Through the planet opposite it
- Through the North Node
An empty house is run by its ruler, and the ruler's house tells you where that business is settled.
In Whole Sign houses, where does Umbriel's Sun go?
- It stays in the 12th
- To the 2nd
- To the 11th
- To the 1st, because it shares the rising sign ✓
Whole Sign makes all of Leo the 1st house, so the Leo Sun moves from the 12th to the 1st.
Umbriel's widest empty arc runs across the bottom of the chart. How big is it?
- 79.4° ✓
- 12°
- 180°
- 33.3°
79.4° from Venus in Virgo to the Moon in Sagittarius, with seven planets above the horizon and three below.
