All times are Universal Time. The greatest eclipse is when the Moon’s shadow passes nearest the middle of the Earth (a solar eclipse) or the Moon is deepest in the Earth’s shadow (a lunar one). The exact New or Full Moon is the instant the Sun and Moon are exactly together or exactly opposite, and the sign and degree are read there: the Sun’s for a solar eclipse, the Moon’s for a lunar one. Magnitude is how much of the Moon’s width is inside the shadow: penumbral (the pale outer shadow) or umbral (the dark centre). A solar eclipse is called partial, total or annular, or central when the shadow leaves it open which.

18 July: the eclipse you cannot see

On 18 July 2027 the Moon brushes the very edge of the Earth’s outer shadow. NASA’s catalogue lists it as a penumbral lunar eclipse, and by the numbers it is the faintest penumbral lunar eclipse between 1900 and 2050: penumbral magnitude about 0.001, where 1 would mean the whole Moon inside the pale shadow. The next faintest, on 27 August 1969, was 0.013. The dimming is too slight for the eye to see, and the Moon’s dark centre-shadow, the umbra, is nowhere near it.

In the sky it is a Full Moon: exact at 15:45 UT at 25°49′ Capricorn, with the greatest eclipse at 16:02 UT. How to use that astrologically is a choice with two honest answers. Read it as the Full Moon it looks like, a culmination in Capricorn like any other month’s; or give it eclipse weight because it is catalogued as one, knowing it is the faintest of its kind in these 150 years. The other 4 are 6 February (annular solar); 20 February (penumbral lunar, magnitude 0.93); 2 August (total solar) and 17 August (penumbral lunar, magnitude 0.55).

How a contact is worked out

An eclipse touches a part of your chart when that part lies within 3 degrees of the eclipse degree, or of the degree exactly opposite it. The parts are the ten planets, Chiron, the North Node (an eclipse opposite it sits on your South Node), and your Ascendant and Midheaven. With only a birthday, the chart is cast for noon Universal Time, so the Moon and the angles are left out and the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars can be a degree off. If this device holds your saved chart for that birthday, its birth time and place are used and the angles count. The calendar file carries each eclipse’s instant and degree, and, once you have typed a birthday, its contacts. Nothing leaves your device.

Common questions

Which eclipses are there in 2027?

5 (2 solar, 3 lunar): 6 February, annular solar eclipse at 17°38′ Aquarius; 20 February, penumbral lunar eclipse at 2°06′ Virgo; 18 July, penumbral lunar eclipse at 25°49′ Capricorn; 2 August, total solar eclipse at 9°55′ Leo; 17 August, penumbral lunar eclipse at 24°12′ Aquarius.

How do I know whether a 2027 eclipse touches my chart?

Type your birthday into the form on this page. An eclipse touches a natal planet, Chiron, node or angle that lies within 3 degrees of the eclipse degree or of the degree opposite it. It is worked out in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.

Is the 18 July lunar eclipse real?

It is catalogued as a penumbral lunar eclipse with a penumbral magnitude of about 0.001, the faintest penumbral lunar eclipse between 1900 and 2050. The Moon dims too little to see, so it reads in the sky as an ordinary Full Moon at 25°49′ Capricorn.
