What a rashi is
Rashi is the Sanskrit word for a sign of the zodiac. When someone in Jyotish asks for your rashi, they mean your Moon sign (chandra rashi): the sign the Moon was in when you were born. It is the sign a Vedic horoscope (rashifal) is written for, the one Sade Sati and the transits are counted from, and one of the two things compared in a marriage match.

The twelve rashis are Mesha (Aries), Vrishabha (Taurus), Mithuna (Gemini), Karka (Cancer), Simha (Leo), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Vrishchika (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Makara (Capricorn), Kumbha (Aquarius) and Meena (Pisces). Each has a lord, the planet that rules it: Mars for Mesha and Vrishchika, Venus for Vrishabha and Tula, and so on through the seven visible planets.
Jyotish counts the signs against the stars (the sidereal zodiac), while Western astrology counts them from the spring equinox. The two have drifted apart by about 24° since they last agreed, in the third century by Lahiri's reckoning, so a Western Moon sign is often one sign later than the rashi. Neither is a mistake: they are two ways of dividing the same sky.
The Moon goes round the zodiac in about 27 days and changes rashi every two and a quarter days, and it changes nakshatra (one of 27 lunar mansions) about once a day. So the date alone usually settles the rashi, and the birth time settles the nakshatra.

How Umbriel computes it
Deeper.a one-breath read
Umbriel works out the Moon's position for the minute you were born, to within a couple of arcminutes, and subtracts the ayanamsa (the gap between the two zodiacs on that date): Lahiri, India's official standard, unless you choose another on the Vedic page. The sign the Moon lands in is your rashi; the 13°20′ mansion it lands in is your nakshatra, and the quarter of that mansion is your pada.
With no birth time, Umbriel casts for noon and says that a birth near a change of sign or nakshatra may belong to the next one, rather than presenting a noon guess as exact.

Common questions
What is my rashi?
Your rashi is your Moon sign in the sidereal zodiac: the sign the Moon was in at your birth, counted the way Jyotish counts. Enter your birth date, time and place and Umbriel gives it in Sanskrit and English, with its lord and your nakshatra.
Can I find my rashi by date of birth only?
Usually, yes. The Moon spends about two and a quarter days in each rashi, so most dates settle it. If the Moon changed sign on your birth date, the time decides, and Umbriel says so rather than guessing.
Why is my rashi different from my Western Moon sign?
Because the two zodiacs are about 24° apart. Jyotish measures the signs against the stars and Western astrology from the spring equinox, so a Moon in the first 24° of a Western sign is usually in the sign before it in Jyotish.
What is the difference between rashi and nakshatra?
A rashi is one of twelve signs of 30°; a nakshatra is one of 27 lunar mansions of 13°20′. Your Moon has both: the rashi is the broader sign, the nakshatra the finer division, and its lord sets the order of your dashas.
Which ayanamsa does this use?
Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), India's official standard, unless you pick another on the Vedic page. A different ayanamsa moves every placement by up to a degree or so, which matters only near the edge of a sign.
