♂ Free Manglik Dosha Calculator

Umbriel's free Manglik dosha calculator checks the Mars rule from Vedic marriage matching (Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, counted from the Lagna, the Moon and Venus) and lists the tradition's own cancellations, from your birth date, time and place.

What Mangal dosha is

Mangal dosha (also Kuja dosha, Chevvai dosham in Tamil; a person who has it is called Manglik) is a rule from Vedic marriage matching. It asks one question of a birth chart: does Mars sit in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house? The houses are counted from the Lagna (the rising sign), and many astrologers also count from the Moon, and some from Venus.

Deeper.a cup-of-tea read

Traditionally it was used to warn that a person would bring harm to their husband or wife, and on that warning families turned proposals down, put weddings off, or looked for a partner with the same placement. Umbriel does not read it that way. Where Mars sits does not decide how anyone will treat a partner, or whether they should marry, and nothing on this page says either.

It is here because people comparing charts look for it, and a calculator that hides the rule only sends them to one that states it without the context. Six of the twelve houses are counted, so from the Lagna alone Mars lands in one of them in about half of all charts. Counted from three points, most charts are Manglik from at least one. That is the plainest fact about the rule, and it is worth knowing before anyone acts on it.

How Umbriel computes it

Deeper.a cup-of-tea read

Umbriel casts your chart in the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsa unless you choose another on the Vedic page) with whole-sign houses, as the rule is traditionally counted. It finds the sign Mars occupies and counts houses from three points: the Lagna, the Moon's sign and Venus's sign. Each count is marked as a counted house or not, under the six-house South Indian list and the five-house list much of the North uses, which leaves out the 2nd.

It then checks the cancellations that can be read off one chart: Mars in its own sign or exalted; Mars in a counted house in the sign the rule exempts for that house; Jupiter with Mars or aspecting it; the Moon with Mars; and Jupiter or Venus in the Lagna. Lineages list others, among them the person's age and the partner's chart, which one chart cannot settle, and the page says so rather than guessing. The Lagna needs an exact birth time; without one Umbriel counts from the Moon and Venus only and says which point is missing.

Common questions

Am I Manglik?

By the rule, you are Manglik if Mars falls in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from your Lagna, and many astrologers add the Moon and Venus as starting points. Umbriel shows the count from all three. Because six houses of twelve are counted, about half of all charts are Manglik from the Lagna alone, and most are from at least one of the three points.

Is Mangal dosha bad?

It is a rule, not a verdict. Traditionally it was read as a warning about harm to a spouse, and it has been used to refuse marriages. Umbriel does not read it that way: where Mars sits does not decide how anyone will treat a partner, or whether two people should marry. The page shows what the rule counts so you can see exactly what is being claimed.

Does Mangal dosha get cancelled?

The tradition itself lists cancellations: Mars in its own sign or exalted, Mars in a counted house in the sign exempted for that house, Jupiter with or aspecting Mars, the Moon with Mars, and Jupiter or Venus in the Lagna, among others. Umbriel checks the ones that can be read off a single chart and lists which hold in yours.

Why do different calculators give different answers?

Because the schools differ. Some count only from the Lagna, some add the Moon, some add Venus; the South counts the 2nd house and much of the North does not; and the ayanamsa can move Mars across a sign edge. Umbriel shows each count separately and names the scheme, so a disagreement can be traced to its cause.

Can I check Mangal dosha without a birth time?

Partly. The count from the Moon and from Venus needs only the date, unless the Moon changed sign that day. The count from the Lagna needs an exact birth time, because the rising sign changes every two hours or so. Without a time, Umbriel leaves the Lagna row out and says so rather than guessing.
