Guna Milan is the match-making calculation of Vedic astrology, and it is built on the Moon — specifically each person's nakshatra, the lunar mansion the Moon occupied at birth — not on Sun signs.

Eight koota are scored and added to a maximum of thirty-six. Umbriel uses the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, which is the standard in Indian practice, and names it rather than leaving you to guess.

⚠️ The eight are weighted very unequally, so the total can hide the thing a traditional astrologer looks at first. Nadi alone carries eight of the thirty-six points and Varna carries one — so two couples with the same respectable total can be in completely different positions. Every koota is shown separately for exactly that reason.

It needs both birth times, because the Moon moves roughly half a degree an hour and a nakshatra is only 13°20′ wide. A few hours can change the mansion, and with it every score.

Guna Milan scores eight koota out of a possible thirty-six points, computed from each person's Moon nakshatra rather than their Sun sign — the sidereal Moon, using the Lahiri ayanamsa. The eight are weighted very unequally, Nadi alone carrying eight points and Varna one, so a high total can hide a low score in the category a traditional astrologer would look at first. Every koota is shown separately for that reason rather than only the total. The nakshatra itself is found by taking the sidereal Moon's longitude and dividing the circle into twenty-seven mansions of 13°20′ each, with the pada — the quarter of a mansion, 3°20′ wide — shown alongside, since several of the koota are read from the pada rather than the mansion as a whole. The ayanamsa is named on the page because the sidereal position of the Moon depends entirely on it, and different ayanamsas can move a borderline Moon into a different nakshatra and change the score. Each koota is computed from its own traditional table rather than from a single blended formula, so the eight really are eight separate judgements, and a couple can be told plainly which of them carried their total and which contributed nothing.
