MODERNA modern technique: twentieth-century astrology.

What a Ceres sign is

Ceres was the first asteroid ever found, by Giuseppe Piazzi at Palermo on 1 January 1801, and is named for the Roman goddess of grain and the harvest, the mother whose daughter Proserpina was taken to the underworld. In 2006 the International Astronomical Union reclassified it as a dwarf planet. Your Ceres sign is where it stood at your birth. Modern astrologers read it for nurture: how you look after people, what makes you feel looked after, and how you meet loss and return.

Asteroids came into astrology late. Eleanor Bach published the first ephemeris of the four large ones in 1973, and Demetra George's Asteroid Goddesses (1986) gave Ceres the reading most astrologers use today, built on the story of the mother and the daughter who comes back each spring. That makes it a modern technique, and it is labelled as one here.

Ceres takes about four and a half years to go round the Sun, so it spends on average about four and a half months in each sign, longer when it turns retrograde, which it does for about three months at a stretch. People born within a few months of each other often share a Ceres sign; the house and the degree are what make it yours.

How Umbriel computes it

Deeper.a one-breath read

Umbriel computes Ceres's position from its orbital elements, corrected for the pull of Jupiter and Saturn, for the moment of your birth, and converts it to a longitude seen from Earth. That is accurate to within about a degree, which is more than enough for the sign almost always; when Ceres is within a degree of a sign edge, Umbriel says so and names both signs rather than pretending to a precision it does not have. The house needs your birth time and place; without a time, Umbriel gives the sign and leaves the house out.

Don’t know your birth time?

Deeper.a cup-of-tea read

Know it roughly? Give the time and say where it came from (a certificate, a parent’s memory, or something rough like “early morning”), and your chart tells you what could change within that window.

Don’t know it at all? Umbriel does not fill the gap with a guess. Tick “I don’t know the time at all” and it checks your whole birthday, hour by hour, then tells you two things: which placements are the same whatever time you were born, as exact as they would be if you knew the minute, and which are down to two signs, both named, so you know what a parent’s memory would settle.

The Ascendant, the Midheaven and the houses are left out rather than approximated. A birth time is the one thing they cannot be computed without, and an approximate Rising sign that looks exact is worse than no Rising sign at all.

Common questions

What does my Ceres sign mean?

Modern astrology reads Ceres for nurture: how you care for others and what you need in order to feel cared for. A Ceres in Taurus is often read as caring through food, comfort and steadiness, a Ceres in Gemini through talk and attention. Best held as a question to think with, not a verdict on anyone's parenting.

Ceres sign vs Moon sign: what is the difference?

The Moon is read for your own feelings and needs; Ceres for the giving and receiving of care, and the bond between parent and child. Many charts have them in different signs, which is often read as the difference between what you feel and how you look after people.

Is Ceres a planet or an asteroid?

Both names have been right. Ceres was found in 1801 and counted as a planet for about fifty years, then as the largest asteroid, and since 2006 the International Astronomical Union has classed it as a dwarf planet. Astrologers usually group it with Pallas, Juno and Vesta.

Can I find my Ceres sign without a birth time?

Almost always, yes. Ceres moves less than half a degree a day, so the date settles the sign unless Ceres was right on a sign edge. What you cannot get without a time is the house, and Umbriel leaves it out rather than guessing.

How accurate is Ceres here?

To within about a degree. Umbriel computes Ceres from its orbit with the pull of Jupiter and Saturn included, which is enough for the sign except within a degree of an edge, and there Umbriel names both signs.

Is this Ceres sign calculator free?

Yes: sign, degree, house and retrograde status, with no account and no email, calculated in your own browser.

What if I don’t know my birth time?

Umbriel checks your whole birthday hour by hour and separates what is certain from what is not. Placements that are the same whatever time you were born are shown as exact. Placements that changed sign during the day are shown as two named signs, so you know what a parent's memory would settle. The Ascendant, Midheaven and houses are left out rather than approximated. They cannot be computed without a time, and an approximate Rising sign that looks exact is worse than none.

Do I need an account or an email address?

No. There is no sign-up, no email capture and no free trial. Enter your details and the result is drawn in your own browser.
